Mangalore: Colourful celebrations mark 65th Republic Day in district

Mangalore, Jan 26: The 65th Republic Day was celebrated in a grand manner by the district administration at Nehru Maidan here on Sunday, January 26. The Tricolour was hoisted by district incharge minsiter B Ramanath Rai followed by the rendition of the National Anthem and “Negila Yogi”, a song dedicated to farmers.

Speaking after receiving the guard of honour, B Ramanath Rai said, "In India, every state has its own language and culture, but on the whole we are all Indians and we live with integrity. India became a republic on January 26, 1950 and to this day we have seen successful governance in the country. We are the largest republic in the world.

"Our country has achieved a lot of development in the past 64 years. Let us pledge to take our country forward with unity, integrity, communal harmony and see to it that no negative forces affect our nation. India is among the world’s most powerful nations. Our development in the field of education has shocked other developing nations. Other nations are also trying to outsource jobs and grab our youths for job opportunities," he said.

"The Karnataka government is dedicated to serve the people of the state by bringing transparency and making the system more accessible to general public. Various special schemes for the scheduled tribes and castes, backward class community, women, farmers, senior citizens, orphans, specially-abled citizens, etc have helped the people in a number of ways," he added.

"On very the first day of its administration, the Congress state government announced the Anna Bhagya Scheme of distributing rice at Rs 1 for 1 kg. This scheme was implemented last July and since then has received much appreciation from everywhere," he said.

"Various schemes like Ksheera Bhagya, endosulfan victims' rehabilitation scheme, housing scheme and various others have benefited the people of the state. Arecanut growers who suffered losses due to rot disease were given an aid of Rs 20 crore. Fisheries port construction at Kulai has been undertaken at a cost of Rs 151.50 crore. Development of tourist spots and various others projects have been initiated for the district," he added, conveying his best wishes to the people of the district.

A highlight of the celebrations was the colourful march-past by various troupes including Karnataka reserved police, CAR/DAR, civil police, traffic police, women police, home guards, fire brigades, NCC army (seniors), NCC naval (seniors), NCC air wing (seniors), NCC army (juniors), Doberman Security and Detective Agency, scouts, guides, road safety patrol (girls), Bharat Seva Dal (girls), road safety patrol (boys) and district police band. In the march-past competation, Bharat Seva Dal (girls) won the first place and road safety patrol (girls) won the second place.

Prizes were presented to the best agriculturists at the district level, wherein Elias D’Souza won the first place, while Purushotham Poojary won the second and Sundari Shetty won the third place. Under the taluk level, first place was bagged by Sheena Shetty, second place by Sadashiva Shetty and third by Sanjeevini Poojary.

Sarvotham Award was conferred on Kulle Gowda M T, tahsildar of Puttur, Subbarao Agali, employee of the district court, U D Shekar, panchayat development officer, and Hemalatha, warden, scheduled tribes development board.

As part of the 25th National Road Safety Week, a road safety demonstration was given by the members of the Kishore D Shetty’s Lakumi Ttoupe. Songs were sung by the students of Chinmayee High School, while the National Integration dance was performed by the students of Delhi Public School, MRPL Bala.

A B Ibrahim, deputy commissioner, K Koragappa Naik, president, DK zilla panchayat, Capt Ganesh Karnik, MLC, K Monappa Bhandary MLC, Nalin Kumar Kateel, MP, Prathap Reddy, IGP, R Hitendra, police commissioner, Ajith Kumar Hegde Shanady, MCC commissioner, Dayanand, ADC and others were present.
