Bhatkal, Jan 21: A youth was killed on the spot when a lorry rammed into his bike on Monday January 20.
The deceased boy has been identified as 21 year-old tile-fitter Jafar Sadique, son of Zaheeruddin Shaikh.
After paying a visit to his uncle and cousin at Makkah Colony near the ice factory, he was returning to his residence at Moosa Nagar. Although he was on the right side of the road, a scrap-loaded lorry crashed into his bike which caused his immediate death.
While the locals tried to catch hold of the lorry, the driver managed to escape. Sources have said that the driver was over the speed limit.
After recieving information of the accident, scores of people rushed to the spot and helped to bring the body to Bhatkal government hospital for post mortem.
Police were informed of the tragic incident and a stringent security had been organised at all check posts. On Tuesday January 21 at 4 am, the lorry driver identified as Mohammed Ashraf was arrested near the Karwar- Goa border. The lorry was found loaded with scrap materials. The driver, a resident of Mangalore was transporting the materials to Goa.
Bhatkal PSI Subanna along with his team were successful in the arrest with their efforts put in.
The lorry was brought to Bhatkal Police Station for further investigations.
