Panaji, May 12: Following bird-flu effect, it's time for another disaster for the poultry farmers in the country.

The poultry farmers in the country especially south Indian markets are troubled with 25 per cent slashing of prices in eggs.

"Around 35,000 crore eggs which were stocked across India during bird flu fear have now flooded the markets slashing the prices," stated National Egg Coordination committee, Goa zone, president, Philip Valadares.

The poultry farmers are worried as the prices are slashed this month from Rs 130 per 100 eggs to Rs 85 per 100 eggs. "With such low pricing, we are not even able to manage our production cost," complained Valadares.

According to him, the price slash has come at a wrong time as the poultry farmers were just recuperating from the bird flu days. "It is not just stockage but also the heat that contributes to the price slashing," Valadares stated.

Hit with the price decrease, the Goan farmers have appealed the state animal husbandry minister Fransisco Pacheco to compensate farmers in the state. "Maharashtra has extended helping hand to their farmers. It's now turn for Goa government to help out the farmers," Valadares said.
