Sonia Gandhi surges ahead in Rae Bareli 
 
Rae Bareli: Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Thursday raised her margin by over 2.81 lac votes over her nearest Samajwadi Party rival Raj Kumar Chowdhury in the prestigious Rae Bareli byelection.

At the end of 13th round of counting of votes, Gandhi has polled 3,18,059 votes as against Chowdhury’s 37,043 votes.

A total of 5.90 lac votes were polled in the constituency in the May 8 byelection.
 

Tamil Nadu may Get First Coalition Government

Chennai: Tamil Nadu appears all set to have its first coalition ministry, headed by 82-year-old DMK patriach M Karunanidhi, who will be taking over as Chief Minister for the fifth time, with the magic figure of 117 eluding the DMK in the 234 member house.

The party is likely to bag 92 of the 130 seats it contested, while its ally, the Congress, is set to get 34 seats.

The PMK is set to get 18 seats and the Left parties CPI-M seven and CPI six respectively.

The ruling AIADMK is set to get 65 of the 182 seats it contested and its allies MDMK and Dalit Panthers of India seven and one each.

This is the first time the state is likely to have a DMK-Congress Coalition, leading to the Congress coming closer to the seat of power, which it lost in 1967. It is also for the first time that the state assembly will have a strong presence of opposition members.

This time, the people of the state have not given any decisive verdict in support of a single party.

TRENDS AND RESULTS:

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa won the Andipatti constituency by a margin of 25,186 votes.

 Actor Vijayakanth declared elected from Viruthachalam. He defeated his nearest rival Dr Govindasamy (PMK) by a margin of 13,777 votes. DMDK wrests the seat from PMK.

Nanmaran (CPI-M) declared elected from Madurai East defeating his nearest rival M Boominathan (MDMK) by a margin of 52 votes.

K Panneerselvam (DMK) declared elected from Kurinjipadi, defeating his nearest rival N Ramalingam (MDMK) by a margin of 1915 votes.

C Gnanasekharan (Congress) declared elected from Vellore (48) defeating his nearest rival N Subramani (MDMK) by a margin of 21,837 votes.

DMK's Anbil Periyasamy trounced MDMK's Malarmannan by over 9,000 votes in Tiruchirappali-I. Both the DMK and CPI(M) retained their seats.

In Chennai, DMK president M Karunanidhi took lead in Chepauk constituency, while at Andipatti, it was Chief Minister Jayalalithaa all the way.

Actor Napolean was trailing behind S Ve Sekhar of the AIADMK in Mylapore.

PWD minister and former Chief Minister O Panneerselvam (AIADMK) won Periyakulam constituency by 15057 votes.

AIADMK candidate Kumar of Cuddalore is leading by over 1000 votes over DMK's Aiyapapan.

DMK candidate Saba Rajendran is leading by over 2000 votes over MDMK's Sabapathy Mohan in Nellikuppam.

In Panruti, AIADMK's S Rajendran leading by 1,200 votes over PMK's Velmurugan.

In Kurunijipadi, M R K Paneerselavam of DMK is leading by over 3500 votes against nearest MDMK rival N R Ramalingam.

AIADMK's Ramajayam leading by 1200 votes over PMK's Padayandavar at Bhuvanagiri.

PONDICHERRY:

The first result to the 30-member Pondicherry state assembly went to the Puducherry Munnetra Congress (PMC) candidate N Anand from Bussy constituency.

Former Minister K Lakshminarayanan (PMC) was declared elected from the Cassicade constituency.

Health Minister E Valsaraj (Cong) retained his seat in Mahe while AIADMK state unit secretary A Anbalagan (AIADMK) won from Ouppalam.

A V Sreedharan (Cong) retains Palloor constituency in Mahe region.

Former Chief Minister R V Janakiraman (DMK) lost the Nellithope constituency to AIADMK's Om Sakthi Sekar. Janakiraman had won the seat successfully for five times since 1985.

DMK's A M H Nazeem retained Karaikal constituency, while Malladi Krishna Rao (Cong) retained Yanam and AIADMK's V Omalingam won Cotcherry. AIADMK wrested the seat from Congress.

PMC founder P Kannan lost Modeliarpeth to DMK's Dr M A S Subramanian. DMK retains the seat.

LDF secures majority in Kerala 
 
Thiruvananthapuram: The CPI-M-led Left Democratic Front has secured majority in Kerala.

Of the 140 Assembly constituencies, the LDF has won 72 seats when results of 100 constituencies were declared and is leading in another 27 seats.

The Congress-led UDF, which was unseated, has won 28 seats and is leading in 13 seats.

TRENDS AND RESULTS

IUML party leader P K Kunhalikutty was defeated by LDF independent K T Jaleel by a margin of 8,781 votes in Kuttipuram.

Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has won the Puthupally seat by a handsome margin of over 19,000 votes.
He defeated his CPI-M rival Sindu Joy.

Puthupally is returning Chandy for the ninth consecutive time.

Co-operation Minister and Communist Marxist Party leader M V Raghavan has been defeated in the Punalur Assembly segment in Kollam district.
Raghavan lost to CPI’s K Raju by a margin of over 7,000 votes.

DIC-K leader K Muraleedharan has been defeated by over 7,000 votes by LDF independent P T A Rahim in Koduvally in Kozhikode district.

Son of senior leader K Karunakaran, Muraleedharan is the DIC-K’s state president.

Senior BJP leader and former Union minister O Rajagopal has lost, pushed to the third position by the LDF’s K K Divakaran in a keenly watched three-cornered fight in Palakkad seat.

Divakaran, a prominent CITU leader, wrested the seat for the CPI-M by defeating A V Gopinath of the Congress by a margin of 1’344 votes.

Palakkad was one of the few seats in Kerala where the BJP had placed its hopes of making a breakthrough in the state.

CPI-M veteran and LDF chief ministerial probable V S Achuthanandan has won from Malampuzha constituency by a huge margin of 20,017 votes. Achuthanandan retains the seat, defeating his Congress rival Satheesan Pacheni.

While Chief Minister Oommen Chandy is leading in his pocketborough Puthupally in Kottayam district, most of his cabinet colleagues are far behind their LDF opponents.

M Chandran (CPI-M) declared elected from Alathur constituency defeating his nearest rival A Raghavan (UDF-IND) by a margin of 47,671 votes. LDF retains seat.

A K Balan (CPI-M) declared elected from Coyalmannam constituency defeating his nearest rival C Prakash (Congress) by a margin of 13,870 votes. LDF retains seat.

V Chenthamarakshan (CPI-M) declared elected from Kollengode constituency defeating his nearest rival K A Chandran (Congress) by a margin of 5,126 votes. LDF wrests from UDF.

In Meppayoor, K K Lathika of CPI-M defeated her nearest rival T P Ismail (IUML) by a margin of 15,870 votes.

A C Moideen (CPI-M) defeated his nearest rival Chandramohan of DIC-K by a margin of 20,831 votes.

V S Sunilkumar of CPI defeated his nearest rival M K Kannan of CMP by a margin of 14,604 votes.

Agriculture Minister K R Gowry of JSS, one of the seniormost politicians of Kerala, has been defeated in her home turf of Aroor in Alappuzha district. She lost to CPI-M debutant A M Arif by a margin of 4,753 votes.

Once a firebrand CPI-M leader, Gowry had won the seat 11 times.

She parted ways with the CPI-M about 10 years back and floated the Janadhipathya Samrakshana Samiti and joined the UDF as partner.

Congress' K V Thomas wins from Ernakulam

Indian Union Muslim League leader P K Kunhalikutty is trailing by 1,110 votes behind his LDF-Ind rival K T Jaleel in Kuttippuram in Malappuram district.

LDF convener and CPI-M central committee member Paloli Muhammadkutty wrested Ponnani seat defeating DIC-K leader M P Gangadharan by a huge margin of 28,347 votes.

Revenue Minister and KC-M leader K M Mani retained Pala seat by defeating NCP’s Mani C Kappan by 7,759 votes.

In Ottappalam, CPI-M’s Hamsa defeated former minister V Kabeer (INC) by 24,343 votes. CPI-M’s K V Abdul Khader trounced IUML’s C H Rasheed by 12,509 votes in Guruvayoor.

In Mattanchery in Kochi, Industries Minister and IUML leader V K Ibrahim Kunju defeated M C Josephine by 15,632 votes.

Left races towards a big win in WB 
 
 
Kolkata: With the ruling Left Front headed for a record seventh win, there has been euphoric scenes before the CPI-M headquarters at Alimuddin Street.

Left Front chairman Biman Bose said the Left Front's massive victory was a relection of the faith of the people on the governments policies and principles.

"All of us should see that law and order in the state is maintained during celebration our victory. We have to show restraint and behave properly with those who have not voted for us," he said.

"We will now concentrate to win over those who have not voted for Left Front. There cannot be any permanent enemy."

RESULTS & TRENDS

West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee won the Jadavpur seat by a margin of over 58,000 votes.

CPI(M) heavyweight and West bengal Transport minister Subhas Chakraborty retained his Belgachia (East) assembly seat by 1,749 votes.

However, Parliamentary Affairs minister and DSP candidate Probodh Chandra Sinha lost his Egra seat to Trinamool Congress Sisir Adehikary in a four-cornered contest.

West Bengal state Labour Minister Md. Amin lost to Abdul Khaleque Molla of Congress by over 8,000 votes. Amin was the senior-most minister in the outgoing cabinet.

Left is ahead on 226 seats; TC on 40 and others are leading in 27 constituencies.

Hung Assembly likely in Assam 
 
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi ruled out a non-Congress leader heading a coalition government in the state after initial trends showed that the Congress would not get a clear majority.

Gogoi categorically stated that the next chief minister would be from the Congress even if the party had to solicit support from other parties.

Gogoi said his party's Bodo ally would get 10 seats, taking the alliance closer to a clear majority. "I don't think we need extra votes. But if we do, sure we would seek them," he said, indicating that he had been in touch with smaller parties even before the election results starting coming in.

He, however, did not disclose the parties with who he was thinking of forming an alliance with.

Congress leads in 53 seats, AGP in 21.

The Others are ahead in 51 seats.
