Mangalore: Oil tanker goes berserk at Gurpur: One dead, shops, cars damaged

Mangalore, Dec 25: At least one person died and four others sustained injuries when an oil tanker ran berserk after its brakes failed. The horrid accident took place at Gurpurpete under Bajpe police limits here on Wednesday December 25.
Apart from the casualties and injuries, the oil tanker also razed down Suvarna tailoring shop and Swagat tea stall and damaged two cars.
Eyewitnesses said that an empty oil tanker with Tamil Nadu registration was plying towards Mangalore, when its brakes failed at Gurpurpete. As the tanker was at high speed, the driver lost control and rammed into a Maruti Eco and a Swift.
Two women who were walking towards the bus stop from a temple were hit, and one of them died on the spot while the other lady was critically injured. Their names are not yet known.
The passengers who were in the Eco and Swift cars were also injured.
The injured were rushed to AJ Hospital.
The lorry driver reportedly said that he tried his best to avoid damage but could not do so as there were cars in front of him and the road is narrow.
Fire tender and police rushed to the spot. Mescom linemen also arrived to cut the power supply to prevent further damage.
