Mangalore: Oil tanker goes berserk at Gurpur: One dead, shops, cars damaged

Mangalore, Dec 25: At least one person died and four others sustained injuries when an oil tanker ran berserk after its brakes failed. The horrid accident took place at Gurpurpete under Bajpe police limits here on Wednesday December 25.

Apart from the casualties and injuries, the oil tanker also razed down Suvarna tailoring shop and Swagat tea stall and damaged two cars.

Eyewitnesses said that an empty oil tanker with Tamil Nadu registration was plying towards Mangalore, when its brakes failed at Gurpurpete. As the tanker was at high speed, the driver lost control and rammed into a Maruti Eco and a Swift.

Two women who were walking towards the bus stop from a temple were hit, and one of them died on the spot while the other lady was critically injured. Their names are not yet known.

The passengers who were in the Eco and Swift cars were also injured.

The injured were rushed to AJ Hospital.

The lorry driver reportedly said that he tried his best to avoid damage but could not do so as there were cars in front of him and the road is narrow.

Fire tender and police rushed to the spot. Mescom linemen also arrived to cut the power supply to prevent further damage.

    Its the drivers mistake. But what's the use saying this after we have lost a precious life. I strongly insist on fixing Speed Governors to all heavy vehicles as that of In Kerala. The victim is my juniors mom.

    The deceased is my Sister-in-Law, Vanamala Kamath. She is from Kasargod and had come to visit Gurupur Temple. Was it an act of fate or recklessness? No one can understand what her family is going through...and how lives of her near ones take a Total turn for no fault of theirs. I wish we could forgive the driver...but just Can't do it.

    Gurupur - is the place for incidents to happen. Such a narrow road, what better can u expect.

    As there are some reasons why the road cannot be broadened in Gurpur. Road authorities should build the new route from Polali to Ulaibettu. This will lesser the distance as well more safer.

    Night driving from gurpur to Polali is like hell.

    No doubt that the devil is living and doing his work because most of the 'disagree's, they don't deserve strict punishment to drivers like this kind and they don't even bother if the driver is left scot-free.

    NO USE OF BLAMING LORRY DRIVER AS GURPUR IS ALWAYS A MAGNET FOR SMALL ACCIDENTS. LET THIS INCIDENT BE AN EYE OPENER TO THE DISTRICT AUTHORITIES, NHAI(WHO'S STILL DELAYING PROPOSED NATIONAL HIGHWAY)

    Mostly the tanker might have met with accident because of uneven high speed.The break fail is a common reason they give for all the accidents.Hope for the right investigation and the culpit responsible for this accident dealt with legally.Thanq.

    Another Accident involving a Tanker and an innocent life is lost. Feeling sad for the lost life. I feel there must be strict regulations to stop Tankers plying at high speed. They are causing so many accidents at highways now a days!

    Gurpur town is like a once Kalsanka road of Udupi. Shops are just too close to streets which themselves are very narrow. Two vehicle's cannot pass each other one without stopping.
    Its time authorities widen the road by taking the property owners into confidence for their own good.

    The only strict law can reduce these kind of rash and carelessness driving.

    Otherwise the driver will be bailed out for Rs. 1000/- bond and once convicted Rs.501/- penalty for rack-less driving and causing injuries not amounting of murder.

    The driver should booked for murder.

    Most of the tipper lorry / tanker /private bus drivers are killers.They think rash driving is one of the traffic rules & the road is made only for them!
