Udupi man arrested for sexual harassment attempt on train

Udupi, Dec 18: A person from Udupi has been arrested by the Thane police after a girl filed a complaint that he had tried to sexually harass her aboard the Matsyagandha Express.

The accused, Udupi resident Abdul Samad (28), made a failed attempt to sexually harass the girl, the railway police said.

The 20-year-old girl, a fashion designer by profession, had boarded the train at Kudal railway station in Maharashtra and finding that she was alone, the accused reportedly started speaking to her and persuaded her to have an intoxicated drink.  The girl who was scared, called up her brother and informed him.  He in turn informed Ratnagiri police and the railway protection force.  The police contacted the girl at Ratnagiri.

However, instead of lodging a complaint against the youth, Ratnagiri police asked the girl to file complaint at Panvel, it is learnt.  The police did not question the youth at Panvel.  The police made both the girl and the youth travel in the same bogie, it is alleged.

Even though the girl complained to the TC, he too did not take any action, it is said.

Finally, the girl complained to the Thane railway police who registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and arrested the accused.

    I cannot understand throughout her journey from Kudal to Thane, though police intervened at two places, Ratnagiri and Panvel, the boy did not try to escape, if he made any teasing attempt. This means the boy did not do anything wrong. The girl is trying to encash the ongoing situation and try to make the boy a scapegoat.Secondly as per my knowledge Matsyaganda train never ply with emply passengers as even there is no Mangalore passenger there will be at least one malayali passenger in each compartment.

    "I was sitting in the opposite seat to hers, reading a book. I happened to look up and across and our eyes met (actually she was looking at me) and she had me charged for ogling at her"!!!!

    any girl can trap a boy using just verbal statement , it just takes a verbal satement. as it can be highly misused some women misandrists having a good time. even a minor casual flirt or remark can be termed as sexual harrasement. men r confused in such a scenario , i just wonder recent criminalised ipc 377 can be used by men against women , in case they get harrased , as its gender neutral.

    people are commenting on the article without knowing any facts on the case. Already some are blaming the TT and the police.
    It will be interesting how this case will move forward. Normally in such cases of misbehavior, before police comes on scene, general public takes good 'care' of the misbehaving person. I am assuming there will be good 60 other passengers in the same bogey. None of these has happened by the news reports. So to early to say there was harassment though due consideration has to be given to girls statement.

    wish she had recorded the proceedings in the train with her mobile without the knowledge of the guy. Case would have been air tight.
    Now it's the word of the lady against the man - no chance for the man at all...Hope some of you do not fall into some similar situation...and suffer for no fault of yours..
