Mumbai, Dec 13 (PTI): Police on Thursday told the Bombay High Court that there was no political pressure with regard to the probe of the communal riots in Sangli and Miraj in western Maharashtra in 2009.

Sanjay Gorle, Police Inspector from Sangli, today filed an affidavit, opposing a public interest litigation seeking CBI probe. Police's investigation was fair, he said.

 
The affidavit denied the allegation in the PIL that the then state home minister was involved in the conspiracy to incite communal feelings, saying that no such evidence had come to light.

Petitioner, RTI activist Ashish Kori alleges that investigation is not fair.

According to the police's affidavit, altogether 131 cases were registered. Property worth Rs 79.44 lakh was destroyed and 29 religious places were defiled in the riots, though nobody was killed. A total of 316 accused were chargesheeted. In two cases, court convicted the accused.

The matter was adjourned to January 21 for further hearing.
