SAC prog stresses on positive effects of nuclear energy

Mangalore, Dec 12: St Aloysius College (autonomous) in association with Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) organised a seminar on 'Nuclear energy for a better society' on Thursday December 12 at Eric Mathias hall in the college premises.

Fr Denzil Lobo, rector, St Aloysius Institutions, welcomed the guests and shared his memories of St Aloysius College.

Sharad Kale, TT & CD head, BARC, Mumbai, inaugurated the programme and said, "I am really happy to be here. We are holding two days of teaching programme on nuclear energy.

"Nuclear energy is like human behaviour. Sometimes a person will have negative thoughts about his work and sometimes positive. I want to change people's outlook of nuclear energy. People think that it is bad. But it is not, and we are getting positive reports on curing cancer through nuclear energy." He thanked the institution for giving him an opportunity to share his thoughts.

Addressing the gathering, Fr Swebert D'Silva, principal, St Aloysius College (autonomous) said, "Nuclear energy can be used in a negative as well as in a positive way. Everything in this world has two sides. How we utilize it is left to us. I thank everyone for coming and being part of this seminar."

Dr S F D'Souza, former assistant director, BMG, BARC, Mumbai, said, "Whenever people asked me where I work, I used to say Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, and people's reply would be 'you create bombs?'. This is what we want to change - people's thoughts on nuclear energy. We want to make them realise that it can be used in good ways. We are trying our best to convince everyone."

Dr U M Mahant Shetty, dept of radiation oncology, Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, Dr J R Bandekar, head of biology & health sciences division, BARC, R R Sahaya, additional chief engineer (CFD & FA) in the directorate of reactor safety and analysis, NPCIL, Dr T R Ganapathi, scientific officer (G), head of plant cell culture technology section, BARC were also present.

    This is the best way to illustrate the various research activities happening in BARC for peaceful use of nuclear energy and remove the wrong perception that they create bombs. Great job by these eminent scientists to come down to Mangalore and spend time with our future generation. As someone who started his career at BARC, I can vouch that BARC is probably one of the best place for anybody interested in research with facilities and technology in par with anywhere else in the world. I hope more and more students will consider organisations like BARC for their career than just industry opportunities.
