Daijiworld News Network – Udupi (GA)
Udupi, Dec 10: Education is a powerful instrument in building up of a healthy and prosperous society. The main focus of education should be the needs, interests, aptitudes and abilities of the people of the locality.
The need of providing good education to the girls of Brahmavar and the neighboring villages made the late Fr Alfred Roche to knock at the door of Sisters of Charity, Mangalore, to open a High School for his parishioners.
The Sisters of Charity had by then known in Mangalore diocese for imparting qualitative education. The Charity nuns inspired by their founder St Bartholomea Capitanio, always believed that education of the young is one of their priorities and consider it as an exalted apostolate which sows the seed of truth in the minds of the youth, implant virtue in their hearts, and thus prepare them to be leaders and animators having a deep respect for the human dignity of every person and a concern for others especially for the less fortunate. So when they received the invitation by Fr Alfred Roche, the sisters felt that Brahmavar was the place, where a school for girls of the locality was needed.
Hence, Nirmala High School was opened in 1963, with the due permission from the then Provincial Superior of Sisters of Charity Sr Theresa Gisaura and the education department.
Needless to say, Nirmala High School had humble beginning. It was housed in the Higher Primary school for few years. With the kind support and cooperation of the people, management, education department, the school grew up by leaps and bounds. Sisters had to endure hardships and face many challenges in providing accommodation for the rapidly growing number of students, to obtain a piece of land for the High School building, to obtain funds for the purchase of land and construction of a school building. The efficient leadership of Mother Luisa Pennati, the superior of the convent and Sr Bernadine, the headmistress of the High School had been greatly responsible for erecting the present high school building in 1971. They are fondly remembered even today and Brahmavarites are indeed greatly indebted to them.
Dedicated and untiring services of the staff, inspiring direction and guidance of the Correspondence and Headmistress, good discipline, creative curricular and co- curricular activities, good result etc, motivated the parents to seek admission in the school and there was rush for admission. So permission was obtained from the education department for the bifurcation of the class in 1971. Since 1980 boys have been admitted to the High School in compliance with the pressing demands of the people of the locality and the School was renamed as Nirmala High School.
Over the years thousands of students have passed through the portals of Nirmala High School with excellent academic results fully prepared to face the world of challenges.
Nirmala High School was and is known for imparting the best education in the vicinity to all the sections of the society. Even amidst the onslaught of English medium schools, Nirmala High School has maintained its reputation and even today, the High school runs to its full capacity. Students passed out from Nirmala High School today have carved a niche for themselves in the society. The selfless services of the Sisters of Charity, impartial and qualitative education provided by the qualified and experienced teachers, support of the clerical and non-clerical staff and the encouragement of the management has played a major role in enabling Nirmala High School complete 50 glorious years of imparting knowledge in the vicinity. It has been a fabulous journey of knowledge and wisdom for 50 years.
