Mangalore airport: 2 kg gold, 9,000 USD, Rs 1.5 lac cash seized

Mangalore, Dec 9: In yet another case of its kind, four persons were caught at Mangalore International Airport here on Sunday December 8 for trying to smuggle in two kg of gold worth Rs 50 lac.
The accused have been identified as passengers Umar Farooq (29) and Syed Pakayar Madam (25), both residents of Tekkila, Kasargod. Along with them, Abdul Nisar (31) and K Mohammed Kunhi, both residents of Chattanchal, Kasargod, who had come to receive the two passengers, were also caught while they were waiting near the entrance.
Farooq and Syed arrived from Dubai by Air India Express flight on December 8.
During checking, two gold bars weighing kilo each were found in the trouser pockets of the two passengers. A cash bag containing 9,000 American dollars and Rs 1.5 lac in cash was also seized, official sources said.
Investigation revealed that Nisar and Kunhi had come to the airport to receive the gold and cash from the passenger duo.
The arrests were made by the officials of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI). The accused were later produced in court.
