Udupi, Dec 5: In a joint operation by various departments, NGOs and MSW students, as many as 13 child beggars and a woman were rescued from various places in and around Udupi on Thursday December 5.
Based on public complaints, two children and their mother were rounded up from Manipal, seven child beggers from parking lot of Sri Krishna Math Rajangana, and four from city bus stand.
It is said that the rescued persons are from other districts.
The operation was jointly conducted by the district labour department, the officials of women and child welfare committee, police, Spoorthidhama of Kedoor, MSW students of Manipal University and an NGO.
Anti-child labour district project director Prabhakar Acharya said that after determining the age of the rescued children, they along with the woman would be rehabilitated in Spoorthidhama.
Keshava Koteshwar of Spoorthidhama, Kiran Babu of district child protection unit and others were part of the operation.
