Tejpal case: No CCTV footage from hotel elevator

Panaji, Nov 23 (IANS): In what could be a setback for the sexual assault probe against Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal, police said Saturday CCTV cameras were not installed in the hotel elevator where Tejpal is alleged to have sexually assaulted his junior colleague twice.

"There are no CCTVs in the elevator," Deputy Inspector General of Police O.P. Mishra told reporters at a press conference at the police headquarters.

The victim in her complaint to Tehelka managing editor Shoma Chaudhury had said that Tejpal had sexually assaulted her twice in the elevator in the Club House section of the Grand Hyatt five-star resort during the high profile conference Think Fest Nov 7-8.

Tejpal in a statement released Friday also requested investigators to "examine and release the CCTV footage so that the accurate version of events stands clearly revealed".

"I cannot reveal any more information because investigations are on," Mishra said.

Sources, however, said CCTV footage from outside the elevator does show the victim leaving the elevator "in a hurry" on one occasion.

A Goa police team is in Delhi to collect evidence in the case where Tejpal has been accused of rape and outraging the modesty of the victim.

The recent intermittent surfacing of accusations of rape against some powerful men makes one wonder why all of these seem to be reported a while after they actually occurred and why these women went with these men to their hotel rooms.

Looks like we Indians have not improved in the habit of aping the West long afterwards. Does the Monica Lewinsky episode sound familiar?

And while on this topic, I happened to be one of those lucky viewers of a TV Talk show hosting a group of very learned women who spared no efforts in relentlessly narrating their experience of sexual harassment which happened years ago and all this during the morning hours with little or no consideration of who their audience might include. Their langauge though Oxfordly was pathetic. They only had one common goal - put men to the burning stakes.

I dont condone rape or sexual harassment.... But! What if! It was consensual when it all started and then later on after minutes or days or weeks or months there is a change of hearts????

There is no evidence! It all happens behind closed doors: of hotel rooms, of offices and now of lifts.

And Tejpal should hold a world record of accomplishing everything in 2 minutes and that too in a live lift - thats if everything that is being reported is right.

In the Circle of Journalists, this Tejpal is well known for his amorous behavior as alleged by other decent journalists. High profile journalists in Delhi have Party in Star Hotel almost daily in the guise of the press conference and then some powerful journalists like Halka Tejpal cross the limit of decency, and god knows how many aspiring journalists have become the victims of such powerful senior journalists.
Just because this case happened in Goa it could not be hushed up. If it had happened in Delhi then the case would have been easily hushed up.

The way the media coverage we are having full day is beyond our imagination on.Mostly the political parties are actively involved in this propaganda. Most of the media houses already d punishment to the culprit before the investigation or the case pleaded in the court. This practice looks to be not in order because the ultimate decision is from court.Hope the judiciary look into this matter and take corrective steps without any further delay to stop judicial mockery.Thanq.

Tejpal is so sure as anybody else that there are no CCTV cameras installed on elevators. Hes trying all sorts of evasive methods- Apology, self exile, asking the authorities to examine the cctv footage and what not. Now he is into assassinating the character of the victim. Now he has come out another blog saying that its was all consensual.
Tejapl should be nailed down. It should be a lesson to all those journalists who think they are always above the law.
