Bangalore, Nov 9: BJP MLA from Sringeri (Chikmagalur) D N Jeevaraj was on Friday November 8 charged with the rape of a 23-year old woman who belonged to the same district.
Police sources said that Jeevaraj was booked on charges of kidnapping, raping and intimidating the woman in 2010.
The woman in her complaint claimed that Jeevaraj with the help of two accomplices, who were also booked by the police, kidnapped her at Kesaki village where she resides and took her away in a vehicle in which Jeevaraj too was sitting.
However, speaking to reporters, Jeevaraj rubbished the allegations and said that the story was concocted by the woman and her brother-in-law with an intention to extort money from him.
Jeevaraj also said that the woman and her brother-in-law had previously threatened to approach the media if he did not pay up, and that he had lodged a complaint in Vidhana Soudha police station on August 20 this year against the twosome for demanding money from him. “The victim’s complaint today is a counter to my complaint,” he added.
The FIR has been registered at the NR Pura polics station in the same district.
Jeevaraj was also a minister (food and civil supplies) in the Yeddyurappa government when it was in power previously.
