Mangalore, Nov 7: An elderly lady has been allegedly assaulted by her granddaughter, and is recuperating in Wenlock hospital.
Ephezin Pereira (83) is a resident of Perar in Padau, Mooduperar. She has 5 children, three boys and two girls, out of whom two boys and a girl stay in Mumbai and a daughter, Irene D’Souza, stays with Ephezin and son Pius Hilary Pereira stays close to Ephezin’s house.
Ephezin has now been admitted for treatment in Wenlock, and she claims that she has been assaulted by her granddaughter Janet Mary D’Souza who is the daughter of Irene D’Souza. Ephezin needs a surgery on her hand. Her head and feet are also injured due to the alleged assault.
Ephezin was assaulted in connection to a property owned by her, she and her son Pius allege.
Ephezin’s granddaughter Janet Mary D’Souza, the accused in this case, had been married to Prashanth D’Souza and was staying in Bajal Jeppinamogeru. Some four years back, as Janet was facing some problem from her husband, Ephezin asked her to stay with her as only she and her daughter (Irene) were at home.
Accordingly, Janet used to stay in her granny’s house along with her child. Ephezin had a large property out of which a part had been sold and the remaining was 25 cents, out of which, Ephezin had given nearly 5 cents to Janet.
Janet, who is said to have demanded more, allegedly assaulted her grandmother when she was refused more share.
Ephezin and her son Pius say that Janet assaulted her last Saturday and a complaint was registered in the Bajpe police station on Sunday. Angered by the complaint, Janet is said to have again assaulted her grandmother on Monday morning at 7 am, due to which she was badly injured and admitted to Wenlock hospital with the help of her son Pius and his wife.
A case has been registered in the Bajpe police station and the police have visited the hospital and taken Ephezin’s statement, it is learnt. Pius and his wife are looking after Ephezin in the hospital now.
When Daijiworld contacted Janet over the phone, she refuted all charges and said, "Theresa, wife of Pius Pereira has given a false complaint to the police using my grandmother. Ephezin was hurt after she fell at home and it was not an assault."
She added, "From many years we have been looking after Ephezin and bearing all her expenses. But now all of a sudden, with what intention have Pius and his wife come to help Ephezin? If they are so concerned, why did they admit her to Wenlock? Why not any good private hospital?"
