CPN-Maoist urged to respect voting rights

Kathmandu, Nov 7 (IANS): The UN Thursday urged the Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (CPN-M) to respect the democratic rights of the people to take part in the Nov 19 Constituent Assembly elections.

UN Resident Coordinator Jamie McGoldrick said in a statement that everyone should respect the democratic right of voting, reports Xinhua.

The international community came up with this appeal ahead of an indefinite strike called by the CPN-M, which begins Nov 11. The CPN-M has called the strike with a view to disrupt the election.

"Closure and shutdown executed by violence and intimidation are against people's political rights and also against Nepal's law," said McGoldrick's statement.

"Everybody should respect the democratic right to participate in peaceful, open and inclusive polls," it said.

The CPN-M is under pressure to cancel the strike that is likely to affect the election environment.
