Panaji, Nov 5 (IANS): The Congress Tuesday lambasted the Goa government for being mute in the face of a threat by a Nigerian diplomat, who has warned that Indians in his country would be thrown out on the roads if the administration did not stop harassing Nigerians in Goa.

Addressing the media at the party's state headquarters, Congress spokesperson Sudip Tamankar said two ruling party MLAs were involved in drug trade.

"It is a matter of shame that the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) has been unable to respond with even a single comment to the threat by the Nigerian diplomat," Tamankar said.

On Monday, a consular attache of the Nigerian High Commission threatened if Goa did not stop evicting Nigerians from their rented homes, Indians living in Nigeria would be "thrown on the streets".

The Goa government has announced a crackdown on foreign nationals after a mob of Nigerians last Thursday blockaded a key national highway for hours, protesting the murder of their compatriot. Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar subsequently claimed the murder was a result of a narcotics war between two gangs.

Tamankar said the police should act against two coastal legislators, who, he said, were controlling drug trade in the beach villages of their constituencies.

"The Central Bureau of Investigation should be asked to probe the two MLAs and the entire drug nexus," Tamankar said.
