Udupi, Oct 29: Excise DC George Pinto and along with other officials raided an illegal toddy shack at Perampalli Dalit colony here on Tuesday, October 29.
People of the colony had complained repeatedly to the DC, CMC and tahsildar about the shack that was selling toddy illegally, it is learnt.
The colony comes under CMC limit, which has 15 houses. There is a well next to the toddy shack on which most of the families depend for drinking water. The temple Babu Swami Daivastana is also situated close by it.
It is said that because of the toddy shack, addicts used to get drunk and trouble women who came to fetch water from the well.
As per the law, there should be no toddy shack within 100 meters of a Dalit colony. However, Vittal Poojary, in alleged violation of the law, has been running his toddy shack from many years.
Ramesh Kotian, district convener of Dalit Sangarsha Samithi told daijiworld that a month ago they submitted a memorandum to the DC and 15 days later to the CMC president, but no action was taken.
“Today, we personally met the DC, and warned saying that if by tomorrow they do not take any action, we will set the toddy shack on fire. DC M T Reju then handed over the matter to excise DC who raided the toddy shack,” he said.
He also added that some of the people in the colony have received life threat.
