Mangalore, Oct 24: "Sports, games, competitions and cricket tournaments are to mark the centenary celebrations of the St Sebastian church, Bendur" said Fr Antony Serrao, addressing the press meet at the press club, here on Thursday October 24.
The Parish Pastoral council decided to celebrate this occasion in a befitting manner to commemorate the great event. A number of projects, programs and activities were planned and executed during the year.
The main objective of the events is to build a better rapport among the youth of various parishes of the city and to develop the spirit of sportemanship among them. A number of inter parish games and sports events for boys, girls, men and women categories were conducted throughout the year.
The mega event of the centenary sports and games is the inter-parish cricket tournament which is open to the bonafide Catholics of 21 parishes of the Mangalore City.
Out of 21 parishes, 16 teams have entered the tournament. The tournament will be played on knock-out basis. All the matches will be played at the Padua high School grounds, Nanthoor. The main sponsor of the tournament is Errol John Samuel, NRI Entrepreneur and Philanthropist.
It is an under-arm, limited-over, rubber ball cricket tournament. The matches are spread over three consecutive Sundays: October 27, November 3 and November 10. There is no entry fee.
Inauguration of the tournament will be held on October 27 at 9:30 am. The valedictory and prize distribution will be held on November 10 at 5 pm. The fixtures will be drawn on 25th October at 5:00 at be Bendore Church Hall in the presence of the team captains/ managers.
All the participants will be given a T-Shirt and a certificate. The winners will get a cash prize of Rs 55,555/- and runners up will get Rs 44,444/- besides attractive permanent trophies. Man of the match, man of the series, best batsman, best bowler will get a cash prize of Rs 2500/- each and trophies.
It will be a spectacular event and will be open to the public to watch. A live commentary will also be given during the matches, he added.
Ronald Francis Walder, Christopher C M D’Souza, professor Rolphy Macrarenhas and Rajesh D’Souza were also present on the occasion.
