Beltangady: Four dead, six injured in rickshaw-tempo collision

Beltangady, Oct 20: Four persons including a child were killed and six others sustained injuries in a collision between a mini passenger tempo and an Ape auto rickshaw near Laila bridge here on Sunday October 20.

The deceased have been identified as Hassainar (40), Mohammed Irfan (2), Zainabi (30) and Nasir (13). While Hassainar and Irfan were killed on the spot, Zainabi and Nasir passed away later. All of them were in the auto rickshaw.
The injured are auto rickshaw passengers Nafisa (55), Zohra (40), Mariamma (35), Dilshad (12) and rickshaw driver Shareef (24). All of them are residents of Mundur and are said to have sustained grave injuries. Tempo driver Chetan escaped minor injuries.
They were on their way back after attending a function in their relative's house at Kajoor when the accident took place.
The passengers in the mini tempo, all residents of Chikmagalur, were on their way to Dharmasthala after visiting Udupi, Kollur, Kateel and other places. When the tempo reached near Laila bridge, the Ape auto rickshaw, while trying to overtake a lorry, rammed into the tempo, killing two persons in the auto on the spot.
The passengers in the tempo, who escaped unhurt, said that the presence of mind shown by the tempo driver had saved their lives.
Both the vehicles were badly damaged in the incident. Traffic was affected for about one-and-a-half hours. Beltangady police arrived at the spot and cleared the gridlock.
The injured were rushed to hospital with the help of locals and other commuters. They were later taken to hospitals in Mangalore.
