Mangalore, Oct 17: Residents of Mukka near Suratkal held a protest rally on Thursday October 17 against the 'high-handedness' of national highway officials who they allege are forcing people to vacate their premises for road-widening work.
Mahabala Rai, president of a committee fighting for rights of people who may lose their lands to the highway widening project, addressed the protest and demanded an explanation for acquiring additional land by demolishing 38 houses to construct 60-meter wide road when 43-49 meter wide road necessary for the work already exists. He condemned the authority which he said is trying to demolish places of worship, commercial buildings and houses without answering questions of the people.
“Let the authority explain who is putting pressure on them to shift the middle line to the east in the name of road widening. The letters written to the minister and the MLA in this regard have remained unanswered,” he said.
“This is a protest against a systematic conspiracy of constructing a toll gate near NITK and making the people of Mukka scapegoats. If the work continues, a full-fledged protest will be inevitable,” he warned.
The protesters blocked the highway for a few minutes and held a protest march from Haleangady Pavanje to NITK. It was announced that a petition will be sent to the deputy commissioner. Suratkal police deployed tight security at the spot.
