Mangalore: Petroleum ministry saved Rs 2.5 crore by use of public transport: Moily

Mangalore, Oct 15 (DHNS): Union ministry of petroleum and natural gas is keen on conserving petroleum products by implementing several measures and creating awareness among the people.

The ministry will implement the recommendations of the expert committee chaired by financial expert Vijay Kelkar which is likely to submit its report on energy saving within a month, said Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas M Veerappa Moily.

He was speaking after launching a mega campaign on petroleum conservation jointly organised by Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd and Maco Co-operative Society Ltd at Maco petrol bunk near Balmatta here on Monday.

Maintaining that the petroleum and natural gas ministry will take measures to reduce the import of crude oil by 2020, he said the ministry is studying the Japan model on reducing the traffic congestion, which would be implemented in Indian cities too. Reducing traffic congestion would lead to saving of fuel , he said.


Bicycle stands

Moily also insisted the local corporate bodies to open up bicycle stands and support people to use public mode of transport at least once in a week, so as to save the fuel.

"The ministry could save up to Rs 2.5 crore fuel cost as all the employees of the petroleum ministry travelled on public transport system last Wednesday. This is a positive step towards conservation of fuel,” he pointed out.


Official mindset

The ministry spends crores of rupees on importing fuel every year. India has the capacity to produce petroleum, but there is mind block among the officials, which is preventing the production.

The ministry intends to reduce crude oil import by 50 per cent by 2020, 70 per cent by 2025 and achieve self-sufficiency by 2030, the union minister said.

The new initiative of the ministry to conserve fuel, will be appraised by the third party and plan the future programmes with necessary amendments, Veerappa Moily said. Awareness will be created in the form of Yakshagana and street plays as a part of the campaign on conservation of petroleum.

    Just like its short history, the crude oil has no lengthy future too, due to exhaustion.
    There is no need to wait till its complete exhaustion and no chance to rely on it either.
    Alternately, the gravity force will never exhaust or reduce, but remain abundant, free and 24x7.
    There is a possibility to use the huge weight of commuters and goods on wheels as a pushing force, instead of carrying and moving as infants throughout the journey.

    If indeed we manage this feet, then it means that Ministry for Petroleum and Natural Gas will cease to exist. It will rightly be so, because there will not be enough oil available in the world to import.
    World petroleum production (depletion of known reserves coupled with new explorations taken into account) peaked in 2001 and since is on the decline for variety of reasons, primarily depleting reserves hence the price rise and rupee devaluation is only helping to jack up that price further.
    Statistics has it that we will not have enough petrol come 2030 if we continue with current rate of burning petrol.
    There is this MNRE (Ministry of Non-Renewable Energy, formerly department within Ministry of Energy) headed by Dr. Farooq Abdullah which should actually prepare for that eventuality. Despite all the much publicized Rajiv Gandhi Solar Mission etc., coupled with ambitious power generation target there is very little data to show that we are on course. Major automobile manufacturers are already developing electric vehicles that could replace petrol based cars partially or fully. The least MNRE could do was to contribute to this ecosystem by providing subsidy for Reva. There too, the ministry is dragging its feet and consequently people are buying Nano (Nobel Laureate Pachuri called his car an environmental nightmare) instead of e2O due to the price difference. It's not that we are taken by surprise each time. All information, statistics needed to predict the future is available and other countries do take necassary steps. We on the other hand, are busy treating the symptoms (symbollic sloganbaji on reduction in consumption of oil) rather than making back of the envolope calculation of allocating xKWH per year per person and take measures to generate that much energy.

    Dear Mr. Moily, Congratulations on the new fuel savings plans.. With due respect to your status, few points I wish to make :
    01. if Ministers / MLA s / any Legislators are taking public transport, it should not be inconvenience to daily commuters and common man like us. Then it is worth. If you take all your security personnel, block roads / block railway platforms for public, that is more damaging. Also keeping in mind, age of our few politicians, who find it difficult to walk, how will they take public transport??
    02. try and scrutinize the fuel waste by Govt officials using Official cars for personal use. This is an important step that Govt must take, which will save quite an amount for Petroleum Ministry.
    03. Improve roads and infra structure for public to use more of public transport than own vehicles. If one uses a bicycle in few roads of Mangalore, sure they will land up in hospitals with back pain problems.
    04. Create awareness among people to use solar energy / Bio fuel etc which will save some amount of other fuels.
    05. hope Govt thinks sensibly while using fuel for their officials' " High End Cars " which are not at all fuel efficient..!!
    There are many more such issues that we would like to put forth the Govt, but it all goes to " Deaf Ears " I feel.

    9. Replace your car’s dirty air filter. Driving around with a dirty or clogged air filter can reduce your vehicle’s gas mileage by up to ten percent.
    10. Get all of the useless and needless items out of your car. As a general rule of thumb, for every extra 50 kg you carry around in your car, you reduce its gas mileage by one to two percent.

    12.Moily, US was also importing 75% of crude now its less than 50% by increasing local production. Try to produce more local production.Its cheaper and no Foreign exchange spending is needed.

    13.This Dolu, Bicycle subsidy will not take you long other than giving you some publicity to yourself and your party...

    Penny wise POUND FOOLISH.What ever savings achieved by conserving fuel consumption by travelling in Public transport is meager compared to the savings in Energy consumption if Energy Conservation Act 2001 is strictly implemented for conservation of energy ( Power/Oil/Coal etc)in industry as well as in domestic sector.Our Honorable Petroleum Minister should look into this aspect.The EC act is kept in cold storage since 2001 and nothing much has been done except Painting competition for children and Star Labeling of appliances by Bureau of Energy Efficiency( BEE)

    The leaders can try to solve the severe problems with right actions and wise decisions.
    If we are seriously concerned about saving fuel, why can’t we think differently and achieve it?
    Can’t we notice that since the introduction of vehicle engine, we have been carrying both bulls and cart on wheels and move them with the expensive force of fuel energy?
    Why the huge dead weight of commuters and goods on wheels can’t be used as a pushing force?
    Why the capacities of vehicles can’t be multiplied with a simple concept change?
    Why we need to bear the huge fuel cost, health hazardous pollutions, high costs of vehicles and their maintenance, by carrying and moving dead weight of commuters and goods of millions of tons like infants, for thousands of miles, every day, from a standstill position till the destination?
    While landlines have become history and mobiles smart phones, why we still suffer on land transport with severe problems, by pulling on with slow and steady tortoise style?
    Kindly look at an innovative idea, help the implementation to enjoy the revolutionary change, with excellent solutions and amazing benefits.

    at the same time don't give subsidies to diesel and petrol for vote bank, I brought land near to one of konkan railway station in udupi district hoping that one day electric local train(emu) run on mangalore udupi route and proud to use local train to travel mangalore which use 50% less enerny than bus trasportation

    Guys, This is a good move though. Our Moily is travelling at least one day in Public transport, Being a minister of our country people were questioning him, why not daily? its not easy to travel by bus daily at least for safety issues.. You can just see Gram Panchayath Presidents or members will they travel by bus? Never. all need their own vehicles. So sometimes don't blame some ministers for all the reasons you get.

    I have seen in Bangalore many companies are suggesting their employees to do Car pooling/To use public transport/to use bicycles. Even though its not easy or respectful for many, but some can follow this.

    So including me many/ hopefully all are worried about heavy price hike, but we cant help. world is moving on.

    At least we can give something to our country. Politics Is Corrupted but our Motherland is not!! Proud to be an Indian.

    Mr.Moily is teaching us to survive eating salt.Where is the comparison to $140 billion per annum to Rs.2.5 Crores savings?

    If the govt.is really interested just follow the Brazilian way by adding Ethnol to Pertrol and support Agro agricultural Economy.Invest in More aggressive oil exploration blocks.Buy crude oil from Iran on Barter system or get paid in Ruppees.Instead of dolloars by the crude from Basket of currency.Give free hand to import Aviation fuel to the Private operators.At last when you can travel a day in public make a practice of whole week.

    please advise corporates to sponsor women only public transport to help cut down eve tease and irritation by conductors. sugesst website so that peple and opposition will sit quietly in parliament and atleast suggest new ideas than complain and make silly strikes affecting poor laborers n daily wage workers - and getting free curses for many generations and curbing truth.

    If the employee saves on fuel , are you going to cut down on his CTC ?. surely they will manage to get compensated thru some other fake expenditure bills .
    Substantial saving would come , if you Stop providing govt vehicle altogether and make it compulsory for them to use Public transport.

    Instead of boosting a petty saving and spending on security , committee and recommendations , focusing on improving our technology on Solar Energy , Wave energy , Bio fuel , Hyower etc makes real sense.

    On Sundays & Holidays govt. offcicial vehicles, Personal & private vehicles except two wheelers should be off the road. Same way all petrol bunks should not work on holidays. Public should be encouraged to use two wheelers and public transport except emergent work.

    Idea struck in mind..of moily is due to Dutch Prime Minister and other's using 'Bicycles' to avoid pollution and to cut expenses. Can it work in India..?? Do you have good road for same purposes...?? Is cycles remain safe on road..?? More of theft will took place..for which we wants to spend more on police force. Are our politicans climb Bicycle..??? They fall while walk...!! Why any petroleum ministers not continue much in the ministry..for long..it's in huge loss..!! Petroleum Corporations are pressing hard to hike in price for there benefit..We are importing petroleum products from Iran/Saudi Arabia..still it's not enough..while looking consumption.

    Let first Moily inform all family members of Ministers to stop using vehicles..and conduct foreign trip often..with full group of members. Everything fall on public..Jai Ho..
