Kundapur: Fading tradition of tiger dance gets roaring again

Kundapur, Oct 14: The traditional tiger dance (Huli Vesha) that has existed for hundreds of years is becoming rare these days.  The Kundapur arts center recently held a programme in front of Sai center to revive and encourage the dance form. 

Senior artiste Vaikunta Hebbar Hulinagesh was felicitated on the occasion.  The tiger dance troupe led by Manoj was handed over a sum of Rs 10,000 on behalf of Kundapur arts center.

Inidani music programme fame arts center president B Kishore spoke and said that tiger dance is unique in that it requires continuous steps to the beats ignoring fatigue.  It is our responsibility to retain the dance form and make it grow, he said.

President of local BJP constituency, Rajesh Kaveri, Sai center’s Chandrashekar Shetty, journalist U S Shenoy, Prakash and others were present.

The tiger dance performers Shekar Devadiga, Laxman, Deepu alias Pradeep and Prasanna were felicitated with garlands and best wishes.

Musicians Suresh Devadiga, Ganesh Devadiga, drummer Umesh, Sudeendra and Manjunath cooperated in the musical team.

    there is no any thing like hulivesha in NAVARAATHRI.
    and in kundapur it is fantastic to watch.

    I used to get the beatings from my parents once in a year till I came to my maturity,the reason to get the beatings was to go behind this Hulivesha from one home to other by the time three hours past and I was pretty sure that, what is left for me in our house,hulivesha was worthwhile watching for the beatings I used to get.Those were the days...

    Hi ITIKA, ksa, Your comment differentiating the tigers between Mangalore and Kundapura style is uncalled for. If you really want to be in debate, then I am ready to be an advocate to "Badagithittu huli" I can also challenge all "Thenkuthittu styles" be it celebrations or yakshagana or way of living or greenery or whatever. However, I wish you do not challenge me and we can live happily rather unnecessary arguments and counterarguments.

    Dear william, as far as yakshagana is concerned,yes there are 2 styles.Badaguthittu and Tenkuthittu.Some difference is there in Himmela(playback) and mummela(artist).For example in himmela bhagavatha use flat single brass tala beating with single stick,Chande(drummer) will be standing.there is difference in singing(shruthi,laya).Mummela artists costume also differs.Dancing style differs like badagubettu use mandi hejje(revolve on knees) where as tenkutittu revolve with jumps.So there are many differences.Coming to pili vesha there is difference in painting of pili and rythm of thasi(drum).But comparitively both are of same quality and it is worth watching both.
