Udupi: Absconding rowdy Nagaraj, wife arrested in Goa

Udupi, Oct 13: Nagaraj Belegar alias Satish, a rowdy sheeter who had escaped from the hands of Kerala police more than a month ago, has been arrested by the Goa police. The police also arrested his wife Lakshmi.
It is learnt that Nagaraj, who had escaped while he was being brought to Udupi court by Kerala police on August 28, had gone to Goa where he committed a theft along with his wife. He was arrested following police investigation into the theft.
On August 28, he was being brought to Udupi court from Trishur for a hearing in a case in which he is the accused. At Indrali railway station, he called his wife by borrowing a mobile phone from a policeman and asked her to come there. Later, the policemen and the accused couple took two rooms in a lodge, and from there he managed to escape with his wife.
However, the Kerala police had given a complaint in Manipal police stating that he had pushed them away and escaped. On investigation, the true story of the escape came to light.
Thereafter, Udupi police received information that he and Lakshmi had taken refuge in Goa. A team led by Udupi DySP went to Goa and began a hunt for him. Meanwhile, the couple were caught by Calangute police for a theft.
Nagaraj is a noted criminal, with over 25 murder, theft and others cases against him in police stations of Goa, Karnataka and Kerala. It is said that he has escaped from police at least three times in the past.
