Udupi, Oct 7: In an amusing incident, a drunk man who had a quarrel with a friend over a trivial issue gave vent to his anger by climbing an electric pole and hanging on the wires, thus creating momentary panic among passersby and the police.
The incident took place near Geetanjali theatre on Sunday October 6.
The man, identified as Rajesh from Mangalore, had a petty quarrel with a friend and being in drunken stupor, he climbed a nearby electric pole. Even as people watched the 'shocking' sight, Rajesh proceeded to catch hold of the wires and dangled from there.
The passersby showed presence of mind and immediately called Mescom and got the electricity supply switched off, which saved the man's life.
Meanwhile, despite repeated pleas by the people, Rajesh refused to climb down, and continued to dangle from the wires.
Fearing that he may lose balance any minute, the locals got a large piece of cloth and held it to break his fall.
The police arrived at the spot along with fire brigade personnel. However, instead of climbing down, the man leaped on to a nearby building. When the locals attempted to catch hold of him, he again jumped over to another building.
This way, he kept the locals, police and firemen on their toes for about an hour, until he was finally caught by the locals and handed over to the police.
He was later admitted to Ajjarkad district hospital.
