Mangalore: Alert cops save couples from attack of moral police

Mangalore, Oct 3: The police are often blamed for reaching the spot of trouble a tad late, especially in cases of moral policing. However, in an incident reported at Bappanadu on Wednesday October 2, the alert police took preventive action and foiled an attack on couples by moral police.

On receiving information that couples belonging to different religions travelling in a car faced threat of attack from a Hindu outfit. the Mulky police intervened and protected the couple.

As per the information obtained, the couples were travelling in an Alto car from Mangalore towards Udupi. The members of the Hindu outfit began following them in a bid to attack. This information was received by Mulky police via wireless communication.

As soon as the information was received, the police team headed by sub-inspector Somayya stopped the car near Bappanadu on NH 66 and took the couples into custody.

Looking at the police, the members of the outfit fled from the spot, it is learnt.

There were altogether three boys and two girls in the car. On interrogation, they said that they were couples and allegedly misbehaved with the police. Hence police called their parents to the station and released them with a warning.

Ours is a democratic country. Every citizen of this country has rights of freedom of speech, practice religion, interact and mix with people, marry at the age set by the law etc. etc.
Now what and where is the issue if these 3 boys and 2 girls regardless of mixed religion traveling in the car from Mangalore towards Udupi? If these youths mutually agreed and willingly travelling so, who are these so called moral police to stop them? The policy instead of taking these moral policy gundas into their custody, they two the youths and later let them go with warning. Looking at what is going on now in our country, a day might even come that I even have to think twice before I get out of my house with my wife, daughter, daughter-law, female cousins etc.

One has to find out the root cause for these young girls going out with a certain community boys

Why they are going with those boys and not with the boys of their own community? May be their own community is strangling\suffocating them from having smallest pleasures? And if they clandestinely go with their own community youngsters someone will see and make a big hue and cry on that, which will put a black mark on girls future?

May be that is the reason they opt for boys from different community to go out with.
One can not deny that times have changed and these youngsters cannot be chained, only they can be advised.

These girls who go out with boys of other communities have not taught good morals in their own house by their parents...because their parents are busy watching silly TV serials...and boys perhaps have at least one parent in gulf who work hard and send money to their kids without knowing what they are doing...

See these same 2 girls,,, where they will be in next 5-10 years....perhaps they will be regretting/ashamed of their own behavior....

This is going on for long time...even though "Moral Policing" is relatively new to DK...

Whatever it is "Moral Police" has no business to stop anybody from doing anything....

Better youngsters do "Self (Moral)Policing"....

Why everyone call these "goondas" as Moral Police. Why use that title "Moral Police". There is no such people's squad authorised by Government.

If parents want to check on their children when they are away from home, let them hire "DETECTIVES" to follow their children where ever they go and REPORT TO THOSE PARENTS with proof and not to touch the children in anyway for any reason.
When parents get the report from detectives, it is up to the parents to take necessary disciplinary action against their children. No other citizen has the right to take action on anyone else's children.

We do not need some guys from some poilitically affiliated organisations to take up police jobs. They are not authorised to do so.
The more you call them by that title moral police, more they are talked about. stop that from now on.
They should be called as goondas only as they put their dirty hands on girls and boys who are not related to them in any way....

Hope Sidduji issues a srict warning to all Police Station in this regard and investigates matters if Police are at fault.

Mr. Shankar and Mr. Srinivas Shetty, with all due respects, most of us condemned the lady in puttur Fake kidnap case. I dont know why most of the commentators are pointing out at a particular community (as i can read between the lines) where mingling between youngsters these days rampant. Thanks to cellular revolution and (mis)use of the social networking medias irrespctive of caste, creed or religion. Funny thing is that BD or PFI or any other like minded organistaions come in to picture only if the girl and the boy belongs to different communities. Does that mean if they belong to same communities, they can do whatever they want? What i can see here is hatred towards religion than hatred towards the crime anybody committed.
I'm strictly against moral policing by any so called fundamentalist organsitions. As long as parents taking care of their kids educational expenses, they are totally allowed to do moral policing i feel. Then we have something called Judiciary. Lets respect that than handing over our future generations freedom into the hands of some uneducated goons. Respects.

As you claim, people from one community are not kidnapping or molesting girls. You say that they (girls) are being forced. If you force someone it is an offense and the girls who are forced can complain to their own parents, social organizations or the police. In this case,they are willingly going around with the boys and seem to enjoy their company and money. This is not force but greed for money and material benefits. Such girls can be described as gold diggers and if they later fall flat on their faces because of their greed and lust, then they have had it coming and thoroughly deserve what they get. I don't think some two bit goondas can change this. These goondas are more on the prowl to quench their own lust or to extort money from the boys. They need to be dealt with a heavy hand and crushed as they have no business in interfering in another person's life.

finally let me tell you that there are girls in every family including yours and mine and nine out of ten have a good head on their shoulders because of good upbringing and they will not indulge in or can be forced into doing things that they don't want to.Therefore your statement is totally shallow and wrong. I am only supporting what so called moral police are doing in dirupting the attempts of youth fro one particular community abusing young girls. If police could efficiently stop this menace, i would have never talked for these people. Even i would appreciate if some NGOs take action to stop this evil where innocent school goiing girls are abused.

Your contention deserves praise and support by all means.

Why certain people are supporting/defending the moral policing action in the name of safe guarding our girls/sisters. No one’s personal life is accountable to these rowdies, other than to the parents, Judiciary system and of course to God.
Is there a parliamentary bill or law passed in favour of these BD’s to act like this? I also grew up and had my share of freedom of moving around freely (even hand in hand) and if made fun of by some jealous guys (I knew how to challenge) but now a days things have gone too far and too law.

I found its beyond politeness to point at a particular person while addressing an issue on a social forum. So I used the word Mom, though I was referring to you. My guess might be wrong if you are a college going smart kid outsmarting fellow readers in disguise.
Coming to the issue in question, the discussion would be great if we don’t wander away from the subject towards Kori katta and other bla blas.
The boys from one community are out there fishing for innocent girls to quench their lust. A fine flow of money from middle east makes them their life easy and more attractable. If it was just for sex, issues wouldn’t have gone so far to the notice of so called moral police. The after sex malpractices is what I or most of the people worried about. Being in Mangalore I am sure you might have heard about the porn clips of girls from mangalore floating around. The girl I question fleeing from Mangalore, the girl I question committing suicide, recently in Maharashtra a whole family committed suicide coz of the same reason.
The fault is not how a girl is being brought up, its not how a parent raises their kids. The fault in this case lies entirely on the guys persuading girls for sex and then abusing them. My protest is against them. That is the only reason I support moral policing.

Since when is it an offense for young men and women of different faiths to walk, drive or move around together. The article says that alert police saved the couples from the moral police. I do not think so they did. If they were saved then why did the police detain them?. The duty of the police was to monitor the movement of these rowdies and arrest them and file cases according to the anti goonda act against them, if they dared to approach these youngsters and harm them in any way. That would have been real protection and a warning to other goons, and not this.

It is already a fragile issue. I was very careful in my observations. I am not in a position to offer any solutions to this issue. There are all age group people coming from different back grounds n cultures with different beliefs, different life-styles, different food habits in Mangalorean ensemble. When diversity is too large, there can be clashes between egos, cultures, beliefs etc. Historically, Mangalorean folks had placed lot of emphasis on belief-systems and cultural elements as well as on nature. We are slowly evolving into a multi-cultural, multi-racial society with migratory population on the rise. We do not know how exactly this kind of added elements will influence native mangalorean roots and what kind of future society emerge out.

If we cut through time, we see spontaneous actions, processes and then reactions to certain social events especially interactions involving young n adults. These youngsters are on an exploration to try different aspects of life and gain first-hand experience and evolve as a person. Mistakes bound to happen and it will be part of life in gaining maturity and learning. Society will keep a watch on adults. Elders who have gone through different age period will pass their experience to youngsters. We already have the social-experiment on factual basis and we know how it will evolve with certain consequences/outcomes. We cannot deny truth and lets accept what is happening is a reality ( not fiction). Competition on a level-playing field is always fantastic which really isnt the case. Guys from one particular community who look smart and attractive to young girls have their roots in their genealogy and food habits. There is definitely a diversity in genetic make up in various communities. Men ( many are not informed well) from two communities where girls constantly get lured by guys from other community will face fear bcz they wont be left out with girls. Community dynamics is fascinating.

Your views are to be well considered but no amount of strict rules can change the young generations (not all) life style. They may act very saintly in front of the elders but what guarantee is there that they follow life on moral or ethical principles all the time.

Such things used to take place during my time in 70's too. I have witnessed girls from a community going after certain community (handsome and well to do guys). Finally, such girls get settled. We cannot change people’s way of life. There was no name of moral policing or being chased by third person on someone’s personal life.
Who gave such authority to these goons? Such guys, themselves live immoral life. This called forced and unlawful rules these rowdies are taking in their hands. That should be curtailed. There is legal system in the society. We are not living in jungle rule.

Following is my objective position about this issue.

I am strictly against moral policing by goonda elements of our society. But I support moral policing by parents, close friends n well-wishers, teachers etc. Over the years, Mangalore's population dynamics is going through turbulence. I see some smart young guys of one particular community is trying to exploit young girls from other two communities. This has long social consequences. Most of the time, parents are kept in dark about intimate relationships involving couples from different castes, creed etc. I totally oppose exploiting of innocent girls in the name of love. This will involve pleasure seeking activity and finally cheat n betrayal. If both guy n girl know what they are going to do in their future by keeping each other informed about their plans in mind, then I dont have any issue. Let them dig their own future. But I am concerned about young students and young girls who fall prey to smart-good looking guys of a particular community in Mangalore. Moral policing will emerge out of fear and insecurity, bcz those girls getting cheated, come from a community where moral police will emerge-out in order to safeguard their own futures. If guy indulges in wrong doing, that guy's community wont do moral policing. But if many girls from a community end in similar fate, then that girls community feels agitated, threatened. Girls community doesnt see any solution and hence resort to violence against guys from other community. This finally end up taking communal angles and then comes politicizing of the issue.

Very sensitive n delicate society, our children need protection and care along with security.

Your observation is very much correct. What I am asking is, why the boys from the victim girls' community too should not be smart and alert ? Why they out anytime and wander about or join some rowdy gangs ? The boys from the other community too are there to out some day but not before pocketing one/two girls.

One has to be competitive in today's world. If one laments about the other grabbing the best, he will remain lamenting. Girls are far behind in number in comparison with boys especially in a particular community because they desire only sons. Therefore, boys must be alert not lose girls of their community, well in advance.

Mr. Gabriel, I beg to differ with you in this regard. Moral policing was started by BD and its sister concerns in undivided Dk following the footsteps of Shivsena which did the same thing in Mumbai around 90s. While i agree that moral polcing by Parents and their family is acceptable, its really hard to support moral policing accusing any community. Earlier we heard about 'Love Jihad' and the Police Dept of Karnataka and Kerala submitted the reports in both Courts of the states indicating there were no evidence against this case.
Its better to educate our girls than about handling and finding a good guy than making hue and cry accusing a particular community i feel.

Some moms here are worried about moral police questioning their children tomorrow. And some find no explanation why someone need to oppose two youngsters having sex with mutual consent.
The fact is
Unlike in west, the act of consensual sex here in this part of the country doesnt end peacefully. in majority of the cases where two community is involved, the girl will be filmed, or forcefully shared with other or later blackmailed or even brainwashed for religion conversion. In one word, the girl is exploited.
So the moral policing is trying to prevent these happenings. I have seen these guys following a car to Sulthan Batteri where they caught a teenager of one particular community with a girl of 9th standard. Will the moms concerned about moral policing aacept their daughters being persuaded by boys for little pleasures behind the bushes of kadri park?

Why should Moms alone be worried about their children ? Shouldn't Dads too ? Its better to return home from work early and take care of household responsibilities while the wife is busy in the kitchen. Refrain from Korida-Katta or gambling houses to pass time till late night !

Brothers be friendly with sisters and discuss their problems. Then, girls don't desire the company of males outside to share their problems.

Glad to know that the cops prevented an attack which never happened earlier, which is a sign of all good things have started happening..but what needs to happen too is, book these idiots, goondas on non-bailable warrant and mess their lives.. they should fear and pee in their pants, when they see a couple of different religion together..

First of all the police did a mistake without keeping the OUTFITS a trap.

1) The police should have followed the vehicle in another vehicle (not in police vehicle) and once the outfits barges in to attack then immediately the police should have intervened and arrested THE OUTFITS. THEN SHOULD HAVE SLAPPED GOONDA ACT UPON THE SO CALLED MORAL POLICE.

2) DEAR POLICE WHO GAVE THEM THIS MORAL POLICE JOB?! ASK THEM AND FIRST SLAP GOONDA ACT UPON THEIR LEADER.

3) It is good that the police have arrested the couple for their own safety.

4) The couple should not have misbehaved with the Police.

Headlines here suggests something else. The threat was from clandestine so called moral police group.

The so called moral police (law breakers) should have been taken into custody under goonda act.

The chase by them of these innocent people in the car, may have met with dire consequences if they had to speed up to get away or pull up to face up with these useless\goondas.
Although police intervention averted an accident or a flare up, they did not complete their duty of arresting those goondas who have no right whatsoever to interfere in anyone else private matters.

Home Ministry should hold an inquiry with the Mulki Police officials on this immediately.

Of-course the Moral Police are answerable, not the actual police. The Moral Police should have waited at the spot and proved why/how they are right in following the youth. If they were not guilty, they wouldn't have fled.

The days are gone that they stop any girl traveling in a vehicle and ask her who her companion is or where she is heading.

If their performance fitted well, Soujnya, Sowmya or Akshata would have been alive today. They take active participation only where their dice works.

Some day they may even question my children - what authority do they have ? Children in my family are their parents' responsibility so is it with all parents. I am sure there are men in each family whom the women are answerable. Not to a goon on the street ??
