Moily to travel by public transport every Wednesday

New Delhi, Sep 27 (PTI): Leading by example, Oil Minister M Veerappa Moily today said he will travel by public transport every Wednesday, starting October 9, as part of the fuel conservation drive to save USD 5 billion in oil import bill.

Moily said he and all officials in his ministry as well as in oil PSUs will travel by public transport every Wednesday.

"I had Chief Ministers, central ministries and PSU heads to declare one day of the week as 'bus day' during which staffers be encouraged to utilise only public transport for their daily commute. As part of it, I will either take metro or a bus to work every Wednesday starting from October 9," he said.

A circular is also being issued for asking officers in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas as well as 14 public sector firms under the ministry like ONGC and IOC to take public transport every Wednesday.

"Its a voluntary act. I cannot punish anyone not taking the public transport but I want everyone from the highest ranking officers to the lowest, to take public transport every Wednesday," he said.

Battling a record current account deficit (CAD) that is a result of mounting oil import bill, Moily is hoping measures like the 'Bus Day' together with a Rs 52 crore nationwide six week mega campaign to propagate conservation of oil and gas will help taper demand, thereby cutting oil import bill by USD 5 billion.

India spent USD 144.29 billion last fiscal on importing its oil needs, which is the single biggest item impacting the CAD, the difference between the inflows and outgo of foreign exchange.

Moily has suggested to the Department of Personnel to introduce staggered office timings for government employees to decongest road traffic during peak hours and asked Urban Development Minister to introduce "Free Cycle Scheme" in select cities for saving fuel.

Good move.

If not by public transport at least staff working in an organization can arrange for a mini bus and travel as a group. This might help reducing the traffic jam, save fuel cost and good company also.

Mr. Moily very good initiative. But, where are the roads, where is the infrastructure and where is the public transport system to accommodate even one day commuting by bus or train or cycle. Does it take 66 years to build infrastructure? First stop corruption which is rampant among politicians and the babus, don't allot tickets to the convicted politicians, we want leaders who can serve and not to be served, who can sacrifice for the welfare of the people and not selfish.

The implementation of bullock cart concept in our millions of vehicles itself can reduce a huge volume of fuel consumption, save billions of dollars, eliminate pollutions, reduce costs of manufacturing, running and maintenance of vehicles and provide adequate transport facilities to rapidly growing volume of commuters and goods, eradicate the Current Account Deficit and have a comfortable Foreign Exchange Reserve.

Any mode of transportation is good as long as we reach our destination safe and sound, even if one has to use the mode you suggested.

Good initiative for people to take up the idea and act on that to conserve petrol.

Other benefit is, one gets to see various things that have happened recently and which one is not aware of because of their travel in Cars, where one has no chance even to glance a few feet away due to dense traffic.
One will surely enjoy that Public transport ride from the house to office and back for one day a week at least.

I, a common citizen, commute everyday in cycle. Can you do it EVERYDAY Mr.Moily ? Just on wednesday travelling in Bus/Metro is not enough. British PM and Iran former president, Many citizens in china, Europe are fond of using bicycles for short distance travel. Can you impose ban on power bikes n cars that suck a litre of petrol/diesel for two kilometers to cover ?

Technically, minimizing consumption of fossil fuel is not a solution. It cannot be a long term solution as we very well know we will run out of fossil fuels in couple of decades. This is inevitable. We will have terrible future for our next generation if we dont find an alternative solution which doesnt depend on fossil fuels.

Otherwise, wait for nature to give a solution. Do you know how fossil fuels created ? Same process had to occur all over again. That is - a massive earthquake that sucks all trees n livestock below earth crest followed by intense pressure, volume, temp. changes spanning over millions of years will end up producing Fossil Fuels.

If the idea did work well in telecom, why not in surface transport sector?
Mere support (no investment) can make a world of difference, with a revolutionary change.
The concept change is to break a lengthy evolution of a couple of centuries.
The huge dead weight can be a boon, instead of heavy burden to carry and move.
If the commentators are serious about solution, we can achieve it and see the wonder.

This is wrong decision by right person.He could have suggested something economical like cancellation of A/C units in public offices.As a rule of thumb 1 Ton window A/C consume the power of 10 fans.Anyway it may be a awareness campaign for cost cutting.My relative is employed in Denmark where thousands of employees use bicycles including their top managers.Their aim is to save fuel,reduce pollution and maintain health.We have long way to go.I regard Moily as down to earth personality,clean in politics.During church attack when we catholics were helpless I remember his statement i press meet.He said "If I have to be frank with the influence of church in my life,infact I was brought up in a church compound.I was educated in a church school but not even once in my life christians coerced me or ask to to change my faith.Infact I was from a poor family background.I am a devout Hindu.So the allegation of conversion by church is totally baseless".Dear Moily sir your gratitude will be greatly awarded.

I think the Congress better not reimburs the fuel expenses of its MPs and ministers. We know how much minister Muniyappa had spent on fuel in one month. The need is to look at the real problem and find a suitable solution.
While telecom revolution is for incredible solutions and benefits, why the surface transport sector is still suffering under evolution?
Is it due to ignorance, negligence or blind eye on real facts?
A concept change in vehicles can make a revolutionary change in the surface transport sector to have a world of difference.

Instead let him advise the central and state government to reduce the percentage of indirect taxes, sales tax etc which is being levied indiscriminately from the consumers. All such gimmicks are not effective. The only thing that's effective is cutting the petrol subsidy to "zero". Let the price of gasoline settle on its own. Gasoline is a global commodity and as such the value depends on supply and demand. Removing the artificial subsidy will bring the price to international standards. People can then decide for themselves if they can afford putting gas in their vehicles or adopt public transportation. Subsidy for diesel should be kept to arrest prices of agricultural products from spiraling upwards.

Most places in the world run on this basic economic principle.

Thanks mate, you understood the benefit of this small initiative by Oil Minister. We all too obsessed in criticizing politicians that we all tend to pass loose comments. If every one follows no car/no bike a day (which is successfully followed in many European countries) we can definitely bring our countries import bill down.
I have seen advertisement some aspiring PM candidates to bring the rupee vale to 38 against the dollar, but the person does not know his helicopter rides do not help his cause either

Apart from sarcasm and partisan politics expressed here for the reporting, I would say it is the need of the hour. Every journey begins with a small step and I welcome this beginning from a minister. Citizens like us should do our bit as well by avoiding unnecessary use of our private vehicles and put pressure on our MPs and MLAs to follow this example. Remind you, oil prices cannot be regulated by the government by robbing Peter and paying Paul. It simply follows the principles of demand and supply. Our thirst for oil will only make the countries in the gulf more richer and we become poorer (I mean the Aam Aadmi”) As a result , we will be exporting our poverty ridden population as labourers to the oil exporting nations to work as slaves! If the supreme head of the 1.2 billion Catholic believers, Pope Francis can travel by bus and in small cars without security, the Indian Ministers can travel in the bus. Who did create these high security? They may need some security at this violent times.

It is the blind imitation of the British Royal tradition. I was counting the number of cars in the procession, then Governor V.V.Giri came to our college in 1964 too many cars police and the state officials like the village officer-Thahasidar (Taluk Officer) then the Collector. Likewise the the top ranking police officers like DSP-Circle Inspecor-Inspector-and a bunch of police constables.
Both sides of the Governor was seated with some officials at the rostrum, looked like Naval officers.

Spending the whole day to make the Governor's visit as royal and colourful? Roads were decorated. While the Governor of the State of Tennessee paid a visit to our college in 1971, I was waiting to count the number of cars. Only his car and couple of local police officials at the campus.

your view is good. But you can not compare USA and the Indian regions. They already have a good security, they may not need more security for ministers..is that same situation in India? in security point of view?. it is easy to walk in the zoo... but one can not do safari in forests..! may get attacked from animals.

We respect your "Free Cycle Scheme" and we know you used to travel by bicycle to go to Karkala Court till late sixties,,, reason being you had no money and bought "Bicycle" on installments then....now situation is different...any way...

Now also instead of Bus you can travel by Bicycle its good for your health and economical health of the nation...

Please don't travel by bus with your busload of security and Chamchas making things difficult for regular bus travelers...

If you travel by public transport it will add oil to the burning fire.
Surface transport sector needs to have a revolutionary change.
The need is to provide comfortable transport facilities to the rapidly growing volume of commuters and goods.
The multiplying and mushrooming tiny vehicles do not help to solve not even 10% of transport need, but increase fuel consumption, add congestion, traffic jams, accidents and pollutions.
The necessity is to reduce fuel consumption and increase capacities to meet demand.
Solution is the implementation of a concept change.

You rightly said, that cutting corruption at all levels will not only save precious tax payer's money, but will attract huge sums of FDI into our country which we need so badly.

Moily's move seems to be a media gimmick or what I do not know, but unless he comes up with creating roads and infrastructure of international standards, we will really fail to achieve any real objectives.

Am wondering why these ministers and officials don't look into improving the efficiency of our roads and vehicles by designing them to the latest standards worldwide.

Above all, crores are spent ((wasted??)) on VIP and officials travel allowances which I think shows his disrepect to the public and misuse of public funds.

We need practical measures and not media attention at this critical hour!!

Come on the Govt. servants, the corporate utives, the biking students, the businessmen, for the sake of our country skip a day from the luxury of your 2&4 wheeler and take the public transport system.
