Mangalore, Sep 27: Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on Friday September 27 organized a massive protest rally against the mysterious death of Akshata (18), a second year BCom student from a college at Car Street. She was reported missing since last Saturday and her body was found at the riverside in Bolar on Tuesday September 24.
Hundreds of students from various colleges joined the protest rally which was held from Jyothi circle to DC office here.
Addressing the protest, ABVP state organizing secretary Mahipal said “Our country is witnessing rampant increase in sexual crimes against women. Although the women are in various prominent positions such as the ruling party’s chairperson, opposition party leaders, past president, chief ministers etc, the situation remains unchanged."
"The present day government has failed to provide security to women. Political parties do not have a serious approach towards such gruesome crimes, instead they are busy in polarizing the society in the name of caste, creed, sect and religion. The government should set up fast track courts as soon as possible. Once the guilt of the crime is proven the culprits should be hanged publicly, or else the government will have to face the wrath of the public and students," he said.
Ashwini from a college in Car Street said, “Culprits are getting out of jail easily with just a bail; instead of sending them to the police, let the students manage these culprits with a better punishment."
Niveditha of SDM College said, "The heinous crimes against women are increasing by the day, government and police officials have failed to tackle and curtail the crimes against women."
Chandini of Besant Women's College said, “In primary school, we were learn ‘we are Indians and all Indians are our brothers and sisters'. The culprits who commit rapes are not illiterate but they are of the educated class. They know how to commit a crime as well as to escape from it.”
Shamprasad, a student from University College said “Sowjanya who was brutally killed (in Beltangady last year) has still not been done justice. Today, a similar incident has happened with Akshata. There is no end to this type of injustice. Police have to immediately probe this matter."
Shrivatsa of Car Street college, Sapna of Canara College, Purushotham Salian also spoke on this occasion.
