Udupi: Five associates of Bannanje Raja arrested

Udupi, Sep 27: Underworld don Bannanje Raja’s five associates who used to extort money from businessmen by threatening to kill, were arrested by Udupi police on Thursday September 26 morning.
The arrested are identified as Mohammed Maksood Moodbidri, Mohammed Haneef alias Haneef Karkala, Sachin Poojary Ambagilu, Sayyed Bhuran Kaup and Shamshuddin Hanumanthnagar.
Police officials headed by inspector Maruthi G Nayak traced and waylaid their car which was loaded with lethal weapons. The arrest was made near Ashirvad Talkies, Santhekatte Puttur on Thursday morning.
The car along with the lethal weapons and chili powder have been seized by the police.
The arrested were produced in the court and sent to judicial custody till October 7.
CPI Maruthi G Nayak, PSI Amanulla, Ravichandra, Sudesh Shetty, Sudheer, Thomson, Umesh, Khadar, Krishna Prasad, Nagesh, driver Mahabaleshwar and Santhosh were part of the operation.
Associates of three underworld dons
Through investigation, it is learnt that the arrested were associates of underworld don Bannanje Raja, Doddannaguddeya Siraj Hassan and Sameer of Hanumanthnagar.
It is learnt that the arrested persons used to identify a businessmen and make threat calls to them for money. If the businessmen did not agree to pay, the accused would threaten to kill them. A few times, the associates used to pass on the number to the underworld don who would later make threat calls from foreign countries, said police sources.
