Mangalore, Sep 19: Mangalore City Corporation (MCC), in association with the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, has taken up a major initiative for waste segregation by classifying the waste and distributing waste bins to the public. The initiative was launched at Orchid Apartments, Arya Samaj Road, Balmatta hereon Thursday September 19.
The dustbins were distributed by Mangalore South MLA J R Lobo in a formal inaugural ceremony. The pamphlet spreading awareness on waste segregation was also released on this occasion.
Speaking after the distribution, Lobo said that with these type of initiatives, the MCC has given way to better developmental projects in the city. "Waste management is primarily needed for all those who produce waste. Better waste management is the need of the hour for better and safer surroundings,” he added.
“Mangalore was a clean city once, and as time passed, it has been going filthy and hence it is our duty to get back that same old clean and green city. We all dump waste in the bins which is then dumped in Pacchanady. But, we must think of the condition of the people who are living in Pachhanady. Biodegradable waste needs to be segregated and can also be used as fertilizer, instead of simply being dumped into waste bins, “ Lobo said.
Addressing the gathering, MCC Commissioner Ajith Hegde said that people have been getting attracted to lots of non-degradable items for their daily use. “We are addicted to plastics more than necessary. If we control our waste production, we can control the waste management,” he added.
Corporator for Court Ward, Vinayaraj A C also spoke on the occasion and urged the people to make proper use of these facilities provided by the MCC.
Big dustbins were provided to nearly 45 apartments in the surrounding area and small pairs of dustbins (yellow and green) are to be distributed to nearly 2,200 houses. In the first stage, dustbins were purchased for two wards, court wards, and Mannagudda ward. Later, this scheme will be introduced in other areas as well. The total cost of dustbins purchased is Rs 31 lac.
Laxman, environmental officer, Pollution Control Board, Pramila, deputy commissioner, (Revenue), Vinod Devasya, president, Orchid Apartment Welfare Association, and others were present. MCC inspector Madhu compered the programme.
