The police arrested the main accused Muniyalu Mudhukar Achary and seized the stolen gold ornaments, a Santro car and a sharp weapon said to have been used for the robbery, and also a mobile phone.
Kundapur’s Shahid and Koni Chandrahasa have also been arrested. Mohan Shushanth from Ampar and Prashanth are said to be absconding.
The theft had occurred at Mahalaxmi Gold works in Pai building behind Karnataka Jewellers in Karkala town. Shop owner Ramachandra Anand Rao Mane (38) was about to close the shop when two youths approached him and asked about a gold chain. They then threw chilli powder on his eyes and carried out the robbery before fleeing the place.
Locals informed that the robbers had dashed their car against the walls in the lane in their anxiety to escape. Police informed the control room who imposed nakabandi in the district. When the thieves reached Attur and Hiriadka Veerabhadra temple via Palli marga, police team led by Hiriadka station head Manjula was able to stop the Santro car.
It is said that the thieves had dreams of leading a luxurious life and had consumed excessive liquor at a bar near Ananthashayana before committing the act.
Ramachandra Ananda Rao Mane had come to Karkala in 1995. He opened a jewellery shop by the name 'Vittal' a little away from his jewellery workshop and handed it over its management to his sister’s husband Praveen. Praveen had gone to Sangli for Ganesh Chathurthi and the responsibility of both the shops fell on the shoulders of Ramachandra Ananda Rao Mane. As there is no secure safe in Vittala Jewellers, he had planned to take the jewellery first to his workshop and then to his residence for safe keeping. That is when the robbery took place.
