BJP leaders discuss Muzaffarnagar violence

New Delhi, Sep 17 (IANS): BJP leaders from Uttar Pradesh Tuesday met to discuss the situation in the state in the aftermath of the communal riots in Muzaffarnagar district.

"I have called leaders from Uttar Pradesh to discuss the situation in the state and strategy for the coming polls," party President Rajnath Singh told reporters here.

Describing the clashes in Muzaffarnagar as "very unfortunate", he said the Samajwadi Party government in the state was responsible for the situation there.

He said: "If the Congress-led government at the centre would have intervened on time this (the riots) could have been avoided".

Riots broke out in Muzaffarnagar Sep 7 and lasted for three days.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress President Sonia Gandhi and party Vice President Rahul Gandhi visited the affected areas Monday.
