Mangalore, Sep 14: Reliable sources have revealed to daijiworld that the flat at Attavar which Yasin Bhatkar had supposedly taken on rent, was in fact rented by a 'Pune resident' who knew Yasin. Incidentally, the tenant was Asadulla.
It was earlier said that Yasin resided in the flat for about 6 months. However, sources told daijiworld that the flat was in fact rented by Asadulla, who even gave his identity proof and Pune address at the time of agreement under the name of Daniel, and Yasin reportedly never came to stay in the flat. The suspicion about Yasin's stay in the apartment has arisen solely because of his association with Asadulla, said the source, adding that there was no involvement of any local person in the deal.
Moreover, the police and the NIA have given a clean chit to the flat owners, and cleared them of any involvement in the case. As per police directives, the owners have been told not to reveal details about the person who rented the flat, due to security reasons and for purpose of investigation.
Sources said that the address provided by Asadulla alias Daniel turned out to be false, and that he had even forged his identity card, a fact which came to light only later.
It was believed that Indian Mujahideen co-founder Yasin Bhatkal and his associates had given a false address while renting the flat in Attavar and that a local person was involved. The apartment owners claimed that they did not rent their house to any person in the name of Yasin or Asadulla Akhtar.
The apartment owner did not suspect the person who rented the flat, as the rent was being paid on time and he used to keep to himself. The person resided in the flat for about 4 to 5 months and they did not know who he actually was, until recently. The name mentioned in the agreement while renting the flat was not Yasin nor Asadulla, they confirmed.
"We came to know about the false name from NIA. When they called us stating that they wanted to inspect the flat, we agreed. The officials, who were very cooperative, investigated the place and left," said the owners.
The ground floor of the building has commercial shops and above that, there are 11 apartments in three floors. Apartment owners' house, beauty parlour, readymade garment shop, IOB branch, Western Union Money Transfer among others are located in the ground floor.
As per MCC, the apartment is legal. However, the building does not have a watchman or a CCTV camera. There is no elevator either, but being just a three-floor building, the residents apparently never felt the need for it, sources said.
If a person from another city wants to rent a house, he should produce a letter from the police station concerned during agreement. If he is a local, then local address documents are sufficient.
But in Mangalore, so far no such rule is being enforced. It is easy for any unknown person to obtain a flat by giving false address, name and other details. Only a few house owners ask for Aadhar card and other documents, said a senior police official.
Moreover, when a house is required for a period of 11 months, there is no need of submitting legal docments. It is sufficient if the person produces two witnesses.
Registration and Notary seal is only required if one wants to rent a house for more than one year. In Mangalore, majority of the people take house on rent for a period of 11 months, said another police official.
