Mangalore, Sep 14: The PUCL organized a workshop on Defending Rights and Expanding Freedom at the School of Social Work, Roshini Nilaya, on Friday September 13.
Vidya Dinker from Roshini Nilaya delivered the welcome speech and also introduced the special guest Dr V Suresh, advocate, national general secretary of PUCL, and an advisory of Chennai food security.
"Dr V Suresh has been conducting trainings and workshops for the past 20 years and has been appreciated across the world," she said.
The workshop was conducted by Dr Suresh and he discussed topics such as Indian constitution, understanding of civil and criminal law. He also gave a few pointers with links to the history of India.
He appreciated and spoke about Jay Prakash Narayan and his fight during the Emergency in India.
He said, "Mangalore deals with a lot of communalism. In such instances, instead of appealing through human emotions, one must understand the rights and the laws that can be used to defend oneself."
His focus throughout the workshop was on using law as a sword to expand rights and as a shield to protect existing rights and entitlement.
Captain Vas, J R Bhat from Corporation Bank, Dr Hegde, and a youth member of Hindu Samaj were present for the workshop along with students of MSW from different colleges around the city.
Different sessions and games were conducted throughout the workshop for better learning.
