New Delhi, Sep 13 (IANS): As a Delhi court Friday sentenced the four convicts in the Dec 16, 2012 gang rape case to death, the mother of the 23-year-old victim said she is very satisfied with the judgment and finally at peace.
"I am satisfied now, and we are finally at peace. They have been given the punishment which they truly deserved," she told IANS as her eyes welled up.
"If they appeal in the high court, we will fight back. We are prepared for a very long battle to get justice," said the mother of the physiotherapy intern.
According to the victim's brother, the four accused "got what they deserved".
"I am very happy with the judgment. Though my sister will never come back but this (judgment) will surely help us deal with the situation better," he said.
"We would have been devastated if they had gotten away with anything less than a death sentence," he added.
Meanwhile, the father of the victim with folded hands and tears in his eyes thanked the investigating officer of the case who in return assured him that he would be there to "support and help" the family whenever needed.
The victim was brutally gang raped on a moving bus by six people, including a juvenile. The accused then threw the girl and her male companion out of the vehicle - without their clothes - on the cold December night.
The woman died of grave intestinal injuries Dec 29, 2012 in Singapore's Mount Elizabeth Hospital where she had been airlifted for specialised treatment.
One accused died during trial while the juvenile was remanded in remand home for three years by the Juvenile Justice Board.
