Kolkata, Sep 12 (IANS): India's apex child rights body Thursday took up the matter of a minor school girl's death after allegedly being ragged and asked the West Bengal government to initiate a probe into the matter.
"We have taken suo motu cognisance of the unfortunate incident today (Thursday) and have written to the West Bengal government asking for a detailed probe into the matter," National Commission for Protection of Child Rights member Vinod Kumar Tikoo told IANS.
Oindrila Das, 10, a class 5 student of Christ Church School in Dum Dum in the city outskirts, died Wednesday, a week after she was allegedly locked up inside the school toilet by some of her seniors who demanded money from her.
While state Education Minister Bratya Basu ordered an enquiry into the incident, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called on the victim's parents assuring action.
