Srinagar, Sep 11 (IANS): One person was killed and four others were injured when security forces fired at a stone pelting mob in Jammu and Kashmir Wednesday, police sources said.
Security forces at Saidpora village in Shopian district resorted to firing after a violent mob stoned them in the afternoon. Rafiq Ahmad, 28, was killed in the firing, the sources said.
"The security forces fired at the mob. Rafiq Ahmad died on the spot while four others were injured," said a source.
"The injured have been shifted to hospital. Doctors have described the condition of one of the injured persons as critical," the source said.
After the news about the firing incident spread in Shopian town, 54 km from here, spontaneous violence erupted there.
Reports reaching here said a mob torched some government property in the town.
Senior police and paramilitary officials have rushed to take stock of the situation.
Saidpora village is adjacent to Gagaran village in Shopian district where four people were killed in Saturday's firing by paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force.
Police said Monday three of the four people killed in Gagaran were unarmed civilians while the fourth person was a militant whose body was not claimed by anyone before it was buried.
Curfew had been relaxed after three days in Shopian town Tuesday after restrictions were imposed following the Gagaran firing.
