Chandigarh, Sep 7 (IANS): Keys to 8,448 flats under Chandigarh's slum rehabilitation scheme will be handed over to the owners by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh when he visits the city Sep 14.
The flats, which were completed earlier this year, were awaiting nod from the Prime Minister's Office for his trip.
Nearly 50,000 people are likely to move into the new flat complex in Dhanas area of the union territory, an official of the Chandigarh administration said Saturday.
Punjab Governor and U.T. Administrator Shivraj Patil has directed officials to plan and set up solar photovoltaic panels on the roofs of all the flats.
The Chandigarh administration has a policy under which slum dwellers have been accommodated in rehabilitation flats to make the city slum-free.
