Mangalore: 'Architects of society' honoured on Teachers' Day

Mangalore, Sep 5: Dakshina Kannada ZP and public education department in collaboration with the teachers' day committee and Shikshkara Kalyana Nidhi, Bangalore Teachers' Day at Town Hall here on Thursday September 5.
Inaugurating the programme MLC Monappa Bhandary said, “Earlier there was a tradition where pupils were taught by gurus in the natural environment. This type of education helped us to cultivate better values and character. Teachers are the real architects of society."
"Education must render importance to the culture of this land. Teachers at the primary levels play the maximum role in building the personality of an individual," he added.
On this occasion, 65 retired teachers were felicitated for their service in the field.
Presiding during the programme MLA J R Lobo said, “In this world achievers in their respective fields are what they are because of teachers. Even I was trained as a teacher but my fortune was better in another field. The teachers who are felicitated here are a role model for us. Teachers are an architect of an individual's future."
"Teachers provide knowledge and skills to students, but they also need to give more importance in teaching human values and humanity. The current education has become a business, hence teachers need to maximize their role in transforming the society."
Teachers B Gururaj Bhat, Abdul Samad P and Gopal Krishna Bhat who were felicitated on the occasion also spoke.
M Balakrishna Shetty, principal of Shree Durgaparmeshwari Temple first grade college in his speech said, “Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar added the name of his teacher and guide 'Bhimrao' to his own name so that his guru's memory may last forever. A teacher was called as Acharya, Uppadhyaya, then Guru, Master and later when the teacher was known as ‘Miss’ the concept of teacher was missed."
He also explained with examples various situations in society which are taking a turn for the worse.
With an example, Balakrishna also narrated how the cell phone can cause a negative impact on the mind of students and increase crimes.
Philomena Lobo, principal and joint director of Sarva Shikshana Abhiyana also spoke on this occasion.
ZP vice-president Rithesh Shetty, ZP member Asha Suvarna, Jayanthi, block education officer Lokesh C, Shivappa H Lamani tahsildar and others were present on this occasion.
Faux pas
Monappa Bhandary, while beginning his address on Teachers' Day, said that the day was celebrated every year in commemoration of the birth anniversary of Lal Bahadur Shastri. However, he quickly realized his mistake and corrected himself and spoke on Dr Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan.

Udupi, Sep 5: G Shankar Family Trust and Udupi district-level Teachers' Day committee together organized a Teachers’ Day programme at Shamili Hall on Thursday September 5.
The programme was inaugurated by Vinay Kumar Sorake, district-in-charge, after which he said that this day is celebrated in memory of Dr S Radhakrishna.
“Like him, all teachers should be responsible for the better future of their students. They should be polite, kind, knowledgeable, and take care of their pupils. Teaching is a selfless profession which will help society build a better future. Shaping students the right way is an art by itself. In Udupi, the ratio of students to teachers is 23:1. The district is well-set academically as well as in extra curricular activities too and the credit goes to the teachers,” he added.
M L Samaga, retired principal, MGM, said that teaching is a profession which needs commitment at all times. “A teacher should stand as an example to the students not in his lessons but in his life as well,” he added.
Pramod Madhwaraj, MLA, said that winning awards is not that important. “There are more efficient teachers than those who win awards, and the aim should be to be a teacher praised by all,” he said. Further he added that the salary of the teachers will be increased soon as the government is planning welfare measures for teachers.
On the occasion, Samaga and 21 other aided and unaided primary and high school teachers were felicitated.
