New Delhi, Sep 4 (IANS): The Rajya Sabha was Wednesday adjourned till noon following protests by SP and BSP members over reservation for backward classes in promotions in government jobs.
As soon as the house met, members of Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) and Samajwadi Party (SP) came near the chairman's podium, shouting slogans.
The BSP demanded early passage of a constitutional amendment so that people from scheduled castes, schedules tribes and other backward classes get reservation in promotion in government jobs.
The Supreme Court had struck down such quotas last year.
The constitutional amendment regarding this was passed by the Rajya Sabha and is pending with the Lok Sabha.
The SP opposed the move and said they don't support it.
As the uproar continued, the upper house was adjourned till noon.
