Israel admits missile test after Russian reports

Jerusalem, Sep 3 (IANS): Israel's defence ministry Tuesday admitted to have successfully tested an Ankor target missile in the Mediterranean Sea, following a Russian report that two ballistic missiles were launched in the area.

The testing of the missile, part of the Hetz anti-missile and radar tracking system, was conducted in cooperation with a United States defence agency and was successful, Xinhua quoted a ministry spokesperson as saying.

The spokesperson also confirmed to Xinhua that the test is what triggered the Russian radars and resulted in the Russian defence ministry issuing a statement about a missile launch in the Mediterranean.

According to the statement, the experiment took place at 9.15 a.m. local time (6.15 a.m. GMT).
