Udupi, Aug 29: The arecanut growers of Kamalashile, Hallihole, Yeddamoge and Ajri gram which fall under Maanaje Vyvasaya Seva Sahakari Sangha limits, submitted a memorandum to the DC seeking compensation for the losses they suffered because of the fruit-rot disease caused due to excessive rainfall.
“Continues rainfall has destroyed 75% of the crop, although the pesticide was used for more than two to three times to prevent fruit-rot disease. Due to this the farmers cannot expect yield for the next five years. The areca crop has been completely ruined. It also affected to the livelihood of farmers. Depending on the areca crop, farmers have taken more than Rs 50 cr loan from various banks,” stated the memorandum.
Farmers demanded the government compensate for the loss occurred and to waive the debt of farmers which was taken for agriculture purpose. They also demanded the government to provide debt to manage the agriculture.
