Udupi, Aug 24: Sagarika Ghosh, deputy editor of CNN-IBN, while interacting with the students of Manipal School of Communication, said that women-friendly police stations and the court attached to it for the early disposal of cases concerning women atrocities are the need of the hour to prevent atrocities against women.
She supported justice J S Verma Commission report over the safety of women by terming it ‘path-breaking’ and stressed that judicial, social, educational, governmental, and political reforms avoiding women is leading to a downgrading of women’s position in the society .
“The credibility of journalism is being questioned. Freedom doesn't mean lack of responsibility. It's the responsibility of the reporter to maintain high credibility. Hunting down someone without proper evidence is an abuse of freedom. Media has to balance between freedom and responsibility,” added Ghosh.
Stating that corporatization, politicization, and trivialization are the three deadly enemies of journalism which affect the growth of media, she stressed that a journalist by definition should be against politicians; journalists and politicians can never be friends.
Ghosh also opposed sensationalizing of news and said that a journalist must tell the truth and take on the powerful.
