Udupi, Aug 18: Modern youth are attracted towards readymade food which are available in packets.  This results in malnutrition, indigestion, weakness etc.

The Kannada medium high school students of S M S Pre University college here were taught to prepare jackfruit Kotte (Moode) in order to introduce clean, nutritious and healthy local food to them.

Students were taught to prepare useful crafts by making use of easily available items in their houses and to earn from them.  It was meant to train them to prepare items used in houses, to continue traditional customs, make use of the available time for productive purposes and to teach lessons of life along with academic studies.

Here are some of the opinions of students:

"We were happy to prepare 'kottes' with the leaves brought by us.  Though we found it to be difficult in the beginning, we were able to prepare them with the guidance of teachers and experienced friends," said one student.

"We realized that we should not buy such items from the market when we can easily prepare them at home.  On the whole, we enjoyed the programme," added another.

Another student stated "This time we celebrated the 67th Independence Day in a very unique way."

Vice principal Filixine D’ Silva and teachers trained the students.

A recipe a month for the students of 8th to 10th standard may make them good citizens of future. Everybody either a Girl or Boy has to learn cooking and then they can enjoy and lead a healthy life. Apart from cooking sewing, ironing clothes, cleaning the house and vessels could be taught at home and dependency on others could to be eliminated. It is my personal experience.
