Canada, Feb 5: Occasions to meet are joyful. But the year 2007 has not one but two rare occasion which calls for a reunion.
The year 2007 marks the diamond anniversary of two rare events. It was a group of youngsters who witnessed the occasion of independence won by India. The SSLC batch of 1947 saw an Independent India within two months after their SSLC results were announced.
The batch of students who perhaps were in their mid teens then had earlier passed through two great but rather tragic events - the Great Depression of the thirties and the Second World War.
It was this lot of students who also heard of the savagery that preceded India's Independence resulting in the partition of the country. It can be easily concluded that their outlook on life must have been shaped by these events and more so because of other personal experiences.
One among them, an expatriate Mangalorean of that era Mohan Prabhu has been promoting the idea of celebrating the diamond anniversary by a reunion in Mangalore during India's historic diamond jubilee year. The reunion, which is proposed to be organized between August and December of 2007, is preferred to be held on or soon after August15, so that it may coincide with the culmination of Independence Day celebrations in the country. No doubt this could be an exciting reunion to meet in person and exchange mutual experiences and wisdom accumulated over the 60 years.
Prabhu who mooted this idea has stepped forward to coordinate the reunion if giving a good backing.
