Jeddah, Feb 3: An Egyptian ferry carrying about 1,300 people has disappeared from radar screens in the Red Sea.

The ship, The al-Salaam 98 disappeared after leaving the port of Dubah in Saudi Arabia on Thursday evening, bound for Safaga in southern Egypt. Rescue vessels are searching for the ship.

Egyptian and Saudi Arabian maritime authorities said they lost contact Friday with the ship carrying mostly Egyptians in the Red Sea near the Saudi coast.

Air and maritime rescue teams have been mobilized. The boat was carrying 1,300 people and more than 40 vehicles

There were also reports of lifeboats carrying people being spotted near where the ship was last seen.
