35 die in Nigeria terror attack

Abuja, Aug 6 (IANS): As many as 35 people were killed in two separate attacks by gunmen in Nigeria's northeastern state of Borno, authorities said.

The attacks, carried out Sunday by suspected members of the Boko Haram sect, were confirmed by spokesperson of the military-led Joint Task Force Lt. Col. Sagir Musa.

Musa, in a statement Monday, said the gunmen launched the attack on a mobile police base at Bama town, Xinhua reported.

"The encounter led to the death of one policeman and 17 Boko Haram terrorists. Two soldiers were also wounded," said the military.

A second attack, in which two soldiers were killed, was launched when the terrorists stormed another base of the multi-national Joint Task Force, comprising troops from Nigeria, Niger and Chad, at Malum Fatori area of the northern state.

The soldiers killed 15 Boko Haram terrorists during the attack, according to Musa.
