Udupi, Jul 31: Renowned journalist Rajdeep Sardesai, editor-in-chief of IBN18 Network that includes CNN-IBN, on Wednesday interacted with the journalism students of School of Communication, Manipal.
In his talk that lasted about one-and-a-half hours, Sardesai spoke on various aspects of media and issues related to journalism in the present day. He also answered a volley of questions from the eager students, who were more than inspired by his talk.
He rubbished the rule that news channels should contain only 12 minutes of advertisements in a one-hour programme.
He also pointed out that some of the channels make sensation out of news instead of making sense out of them, thereby misleading the viewers.
"There is a need to reinvent and rediscover journalism. Journalism has changed over the last 25 years. News is converted into a box office drama. Journalism is not a box office. One cannot write a story based on calculations like whether it would sell or not," he said.
He added that one should strive to restore credibility and morality in journalism. "There is a need for honesty and a certain element of dignity among journalists," he added.
"There is a necessity to create space for good news and at the same time reveal the rot in the society," Sardesai said, adding "A journalist should be a voice to the voiceless.
"Everyday is new day in journalism. Journalists are notoriously cynical. We are in a paradoxical situation where the quality has declined and quantity has increased. It is high time to have proper regulations as the one BBC has and it should come from autonomous regulatory body," he stressed.
He added the major disadvantage is that the story that appears in the media is more of a reporter than of the people concerned.
AMIC Vardesh Hiregange, Manipal University PRO Alex Chandy and others were present.
