UP mulls privatising water supply

Lucknow, July 25 (IANS): The Uttar Pradesh government is tinkering with the idea of privatising the household water supply, an official said.

The state government has given nod to a pilot project to be run on a trial basis in Ghaziabad.

"We will be trying the model in Ghaziabad and based on the results, the private model will be implemented in other parts of the state," an official told IANS.

The project would be implemented in areas, including Kavi Nagar, Indirapuram and Vaishali of Ghaziabad.

The effort is not only to ensure proper supply to these residential areas but also to be sure that disputes over water do not occur, the official said.

He added that talks with a Mumbai-based company are in the initial stages and very soon a decision would be taken.

With growing population and shrinking government resources, officials say, privatisation of water supply seems the best option.
