Mumbai, Jul 24: The funeral of Cardinal Simon Pimenta of Mumbai Catholic diocese was held here on Tuesday July 23 evening. The mortal remains of ninety-three-year-old Cardinal Simon Pimenta who passed away here on Friday July 19 was placed for public homage at Holy Name Cathedral, Colaba, here on Tuesday July 23 at 10 am.
Archbishop Cardinal Dr Oswald Gracious celebrated the funeral Mass at the Cathedral at 12.00pm and conducted the funeral rites at the occasion.
The mortal remains were again placed at Cardinal Simon’s ancestral house at Marol, Andheri (East), where he was born and brought up, on Tuesday afternoon.
The mortal remains were taken in a grand procession from the residence to the local St John the Evangelist Church, where Archbishop Cardinal Dr Oswald celebrated the funeral Mass and also conducted the last rites. The mortal remains of Cardinal Pimenta was buried ceremoniously the cemetery.
Mumbai former Bishop Dr Perceval E Fernandes, Bishop Bosco Penha, Bishop Angelo Gracious, Pune diocese Thomas Dabhre, Vasai diocese Felix Machado, Amaravati diocese Alence Gonsalves offered prayers for the repose of departed soul.
Hundreds of religious priests from across India abroad, nuns, and people of different faith attended the last journey of Cardinal Pimenta on the occasion. All the Catholic education institutions announced holiday in due respect to Cardinal Pimenta.
