Mangalore: Record number of container vessels call at NMPT

Mangalore, Jul 8: For the first time, New Mangalore Port witnessed the arrival of three container vessels – M V Oel Kutch, M V Noble Breeze and main line vessel M V Kota Nebula on a single day.
Around 2000 containers were handled in these three vessels. Main line container vessel of M/s Pacific International Lines (PIL) – M V Kota Nebula from East Africa (Port Matwara) is the 4th main line vessel which called at the Port during the current financial year.
So far 13,595 TEUs of containerized cargo has been handled at the Port during the current year 2013-14 as against 13,073 TEUs handled during the corresponding period of last year with a growth of 4%.
Dr P Tamilvanan, chairman stated that the increase in the number of container vessels and traffic is the result of pro-active business drive initiative of NMPT. He expressed happiness over the overwhelming response from the MLOs and users by tapping the advantageous position of lesser transit time and lesser handling cost.
“From a humble beginning with 1 vessel during 2007-08, now it is the 35th main line vessel calling at the Port,” he said.
He also congratulated the officers, staff, workers and union leaders for their cooperation in achieving 12.27% growth in overall traffic during the first quarter of the current fiscal year 2013-14
